Making DEI an Integral Part of Your Business Strategy

Making DEI an Integral Part of Your Business Strategy

Here we are in January 2023.?It’s been a rough nearly three years since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.?That horrific event became the catalyst that caused all of us to examine and re-examine what we’ve been doing with our lives.?Millions of people have made decisions that have up-ended the workplace and our places in it and the tumult still is not over.?Blind-sided by “The Great Resignation” and “quiet quitting”, employers responded by pledging to make Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) a top priority.

Companies created DEI positions and committees.?Some began dialogues with employees to let all voices be heard.?All that momentum was great, but the engine of change driven by DEI has stalled.?Yet I feel optimistic about DEI and its future in Corporate America.

Although businesses are still struggling to find and keep employees and the focus is turning away from DEI, data shows that there is pressure to keep it center stage.?

According to surveys taken by Glassdoor, "80% of job seekers between 18 and 34 say that diversity, equity, and inclusion are very or somewhat important to them when they are considering taking a new job."

The lack of commitment to DEI is preventing its benefits from being realized and the reason they are so elusive is simple:?DEI is not included in the business’s overall strategy.

Why DEI??Because, since 2020, the business world has changed dramatically.?Employees have been telling employers that the workplace has to change previous mindsets and broaden opportunities for more employees to make their contributions at all levels.

The challenges in today’s work world demand that companies recognize talent and channel their energy into a coherent business strategy.?As study after study has shown, making the workplace more inclusive will result in increased productivity and profitability.

New Year’s EVOLUTION VS RESOLUTION

Seize a Great Opportunity in 2023

This newsletter is written for CHROs, HR leaders and managers, DEI & Culture leaders,?and Change leaders and agents throughout an organization…at the epicenter of change.?Today, I challenge you to make a New Year’s “Evolution” versus a Resolution as we honor Martin Luther King Jr. this week. If your organization still lacks a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plan that is aligned with your business goals, take decisive action to be a catalyst to co-create that plan.

“Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reflect on his other civil rights activists accomplishments and the work that still needs to be done for equity,?inclusion, and equality.

Dr. King’s legacy as leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s opened doors that, previously, were closed to members of marginalized groups.?The most significant proof of that was the passage of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and its subsequent amendments, which have made it unlawful to discriminate against anyone in the workplace based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information.?Anti-discrimination laws were a start, but they have not led to equality and equity in employment.??

This MLK holiday week, take time to reflect and take action on why your organization is still lacking a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plan that is aligned with your business goals.”

A sizeable majority of today’s workforce wants DEI to be in the DNA of the companies where they work.?To grow and sustain their business, employers need to take deliberate and meaningful action to attract employees and, once hired, to keep them by developing and promoting existing talent.?A DEI strategy incorporated into your organization’s business strategy is essential.

My passionate mission as Founder and CEO of Inclusive Leaders Group, LLC is helping organizations of all sizes in any industry achieve that goal.
