Making choices
Recently I was talking to a potential client about his weight loss plan and I was explaining my idea that it’s possible to lose weight while eating whatever you want. This was the biggest challenge for me when I started and so I was not surprised at his confusion. How it works can be summed up as: It’s all about making choices.
There are loads of choices to be made and remember there are no right or wrong choices. These are your choices, and they will, almost certainly, be different from anyone else’s.
When will I eat?
· If I’ve got a planned event later in the day when I know I’m going to eat lots, and I choose to do that, I may miss breakfast, or have a light meal, or a shake, some fruit etc.
· If I go out for a coffee I know a scone will probably be involved. I will count it as lunch, so the scone is not as well as it’s instead of. (One thing I have noticed is how discerning I’ve become about scones with my rules being:
o always fruit and
o a great scone should be able to be eaten without any extra stuff being ladled on.)
· Will I have the same food as my family, or will I have to cook separately? Only if you choose to. I rarely eat a different meal than my beloved and if I do it’s because I choose to. What I have done is gotten some smaller (but not small) plates and I for me to use. I have extra veg, and/or less of the other stuff, plus couple of roast potatoes rather than a heap (and I can eat a heap!)
· Will I have to buy expensive special foods for me? Only if you choose to. I occasionally do a detox and that costs extra money, but it probably balances with the cost of the food I’m not eating. One client used a three-day schedule I found, and she changed it to suit her. She said she’s spending less per week than she did before.
What about exercise?
· Do I need to join a gym, pay for classes? No! I am a member of a gym but have not attended since we started lockdown. I used to attend loads of Zumba. Now I use the internet and I can get sweaty without it costing me anything.
· Will I have to exercise every day? You choose. I do because I like to eat lots, so I have to balance and manage my plan and that means exercise. If I want to lose weight I either eat less or exercise more and I always go with the ‘exercise more’ option.
· Do I have to do certain exercises? No! Find something you love, or can just about stand, and do that. I do steps every day and sometimes these are done while I watch dross TV.
How will I track progress?
· Guess what…you choose! I use a cheap wrist band thingy that measures my steps, I use My Fitness Pal to track input versus output. I don’t spend time after every meal plotting what I’ve eaten. I put in what I’ve eaten and sometimes, at the end of the day, the input and output don’t balance in a good way. See https://www.glenyschatterley.uk.com/i-o-me/ to read how I deal with this. So you can use a cheap tracker, a notebook, a napkin or whatever makes you feel that you are taking control and managing and balancing your plan.
