How Females made Springtime breathing easier
Globally the season of Spring is a period when the world smiles wide for the first time, after a chilly winter. Brighter sunshine all around, makes a riot of color all around, and makes outdoors a time to explore and enjoy, before the hot summer comes knocking!
However, for millions of Americans, the very thought of Spring brings only sneeze and tears!
Seasonal allergies plague over 30% of US adults and a staggering 40% of US children. Billions of dollars, hence, are lost in productivity and healthcare costs.
What caused this seasonal misery?
For decades, the US cities prioritized planting male trees due to a 1949 USDA recommendation. Why? Because male trees are believed to be less messy and lower maintenance. As a result, these trees dominated parks and streets.
However, a crucial fact went unnoticed for a long time: i.e., only male trees release pollen, blanketing the air with allergy-inducing pollen during the Spring. This posed a fundamental challenge, because it meant cities and neighborhoods were actually exacerbating the very problem, they sought to avoid... unknowingly of course!
Claritin - a leading allergy-relief brand - saw it as an opportunity!
Through an extensive research, Claritin discovered that people were deeply frustrated with seasonal allergies. They wished for a proactive solution that could eradicate the Springtime allergies altogether. Beyond medication, they desired an allergy-friendly environment.
This craving resonated deeply with all allergy sufferers, who were tired of staying home during peak-pollen inducing Spring seasons.
For Claritin therefore, this was a great opportunity - i.e. creating a prevention mechanism, instead of a cure!

Strategic Solution - 'The DiversiTree Project'
Partnering with Arbor Day Foundation - a renowned tree-planting organization - Claritin launched The DiversiTree Project, which acted on multiple levels:
Campaign Impact
The DiversiTree Project became a resounding success! How?
More importantly, the project demonstrably improved the lives of thousands of allergy sufferers.
Campaign Legacy
The DiversiTree Project transcended the very realm of marketing, and reiterated marketing's greater role in bringing changes in the society.
While long-term pollen reduction takes time, the initiative sparked a national conversation about responsible tree planting, with the urban planners, thus potentially influencing the future tree selection policies. It went on to inspire other organizations too, which adopted similar initiatives to promote environmental well-being.
It's a legacy that continues to breathe new life into the fight against seasonal allergies.
