Making Big Decisions

Making Big Decisions

Making a big decision can be like standing on the edge of a diving board. You are looking down at the water below. You know you want to jump, but your feet won't move. Your inner-voice springs into action:

Do I remember how to swim?

Will the water be too cold?

Will I belly flop and embarrass myself?

Fear and uncertainty has you stuck in place!

But what if I told you there was a way to make big decisions without all the stress and anxiety? What if I told you there was a secret formula that could help you choose the right path every time?

Okay, there is no secret formula! But there are some tips and tricks that can make the decision-making process a little easier.

Stay In Tune With Your Emotions

One of the most powerful drivers of our decision-making is our emotions. When we're faced with a big decision, we experience a range of feelings- anxiety, excitement, fear, optimism, etc. Sometimes your emotions can feel like they're pulling you in two different directions. I work with a lot of folks who are considering quitting their stable job to start their own business. On the one hand, they're excited about the prospect of pursuing a new challenge and being their own boss. On the other hand, they're scared about the financial risks and uncertain future.

During your decision making process, it is imperative that you reflect on your emotions and identify where they're coming from. What is the root cause of your fears?

By acknowledging your emotions and identifying their source, you can clear the path to a more informed decision.

Consider Your Values and Beliefs

Our values and beliefs are the guiding principles that shape our decisions and actions. They're often deeply ingrained in us and can be difficult to change. When we're faced with a big decision, it's important to consider how it aligns with our values and beliefs.

For example, imagine you're considering taking a high-paying job that requires you to work long hours and sacrifice time with your family. If you value work-life balance, this decision may not align with your values and lead to resentment and burnout down the line.

During your decision making process, take time to reflect on what's truly important to you. What values do you want to prioritize in your life? How does this decision align with those values? By staying true to your values and beliefs, you can make decisions that bring you fulfillment and satisfaction in the long run.

Don't Forget Rational Analysis

While emotions and values play an important role in our decision-making, it is equally imperative that you evaluate your options objectively. Gather the right data, weigh your pros and cons, and consider potential risks and rewards of each option. Be wary of analysis paralysis. Overthinking and indecision can easily lead to missed opportunity. Aim to get 85% comfortable before making a big decision. Chalk the remaining 15% up to a calculated lead of faith.

Trust Your Gut

And last but not lest, don't forget to trust your gut. Sometimes our instincts can lead us in the right direction, even if it doesn't make logical sense. If you're feeling drawn to a certain path, don't be afraid to follow it.

In the end, making big decisions is never easy, but with a little courage, you can jump off that diving board and make a splash in whatever adventure awaits. So go ahead and take that leap of faith – the water might be cold, but the thrill of the ride is worth it.
