Making 5th Grade Math Fun with Basset Nuwga

As many of you know, education is a vital part of parenting, but let’s face it—sometimes it can feel a bit… vanilla. Especially when you’re helping your 12-year-old daughter prep for a 5th-grade math quiz, and she finds the subject less than thrilling. ??♂?

Recently, I found myself faced with the challenge of helping my daughter, Lily, memorize some essential math terms. These definitions are important—words like Factor, Multiple, and Distributive Property—but the challenge was making them stick in a way that wasn’t just rote memorization.

Enter ChatGPT and Midjourney. ??

I decided to spice up this study session by creating a story featuring an old family favorite: Basset Nuwga, our fictional, lovable, and quite overweight Basset Hound who has been a part of our stories since Lily was a toddler. I used ChatGPT to brainstorm some fun, quirky scenarios where Basset Nuwga demonstrates these math concepts in a way that’s both accurate and entertaining.

For example, we imagined Basset Nuwga organizing his chew toys into neat rows and columns to help illustrate the concept of an Array. Then, I used Midjourney to bring these scenarios to life with vivid illustrations, adding a creative and visual layer to our study time.

This entire exercise allowed me to not only help Lily prepare for her quiz but also expand my own creative and technological skillset. Plus, it brought back fond memories of the stories we used to tell when she was younger, turning a mundane task into a fun and endearing experience that we both enjoyed.
