Makerspace Safety Nuggets for Users
?? Prevention is better than cure!
- Regarding operation of unfamiliar equipment or tools:
- Seek guidance, read instructions.
- If possible, learn while the staff performs the operation.
- In case of any heavy equipment, perform under supervision.
- Read about the equipment and tools available at the space.
- Understand the risks that you may encounter.
- Remember, it’s a community.
- Help fellow users with equipment and tools on which you have command.
- Advise anyone you see operating equipment in an inappropriate fashion.
- As Bobby Sherman says, Take some time to learn first aid and CPR. It saves lives, and it works.
- Protection is a must depending upon the equipment you are using. Use gloves, goggles, earplugs, and other safety attire appropriately.
- In special circumstances, you may also be needed to cover your body, tie long hairs in a bun or avoid loose items like jewellery or ornaments.
- Cleanliness does not only help you avoid unforeseen injuries, but is also a must for prevention from microscopic diseases in a community-based space.
- Distractions are disastrous. Avoid making loud noises or overcrowding.
- After using the equipment, they should be placed where they were originally kept. There could be a safety related design scheme in place.
Keeping these in mind, enjoy making!
