How to use "The One Thing" to improve your speech

How to use "The One Thing" to improve your speech

Welcome back to this week’s top five speech tips. This week’s tips are courtesy of the book “The One Thing” by Gary Keller.

In this great book, Mr. Keller provides a lot of examples on why it’s important to focus in on “one thing”.  Whether it’s work, home, financial or personal, Mr. Keller has a lot of great resources on his website that will help you narrow in on your “one thing”.

This got me thinking, what if we applied the concept of â€œThe One Thing” to our speeches? Here are 5 ways to use the concept of “The One Thing” to make your speech standout.

  1. One key message. You should be able to expand your key message in 10 words or less. If you can't, than maybe your speech is too broad.
  2. One strong emotion. After you have established your what you message is, you will need to tie it back to one key emotion. Is your message supposed to leave your audience feeling joyful, excited, motivated or inspired.
  3. One life changing idea. We all know at least one thing that has made our lives better. To get a better understanding of what your one thing might be, check out any TED speech.
  4. One pivotal moment. In your speech, you should strive to reach an “a ha” moment. It's the point in your speech where all your points come together.
  5. One call to action. If you give your audience more than one take away, there is a good chance that they will forget it by the time they leave their seats. Leave your audience with only one action to work on so it will increase the chance of the action being performed.

Weekly Exercise:
Before you write out your next speech, try to explain it in 10 words or less. This will help you isolate your core message.
