Make Your Job Search Faster By Landing Higher Quality Interviews

Another way to make your job search faster is by landing higher quality interviews.


All interviews are not created equal. Some interviews are intended to choose the best candidate, while others are scheduled for different reasons and provide no chance of being hired.


If you don't recognize the difference between high and low quality interviews, you end up wasting most of your job search with interviews that won't lead you to an offer.


Here are some ways to recognize the difference between high and low quality interviews:


  • During high quality interviews, hiring managers are engaged, do more than just ask questions on the "standard list", encourage you to ask questions, and give deep answers to the questions you ask.
  • During poor quality interviews, hiring managers "go through the motions", are distracted with calls/texts/email, don't go past standard questions, don't encourage your questions, give minimal/quick answers to the questions you ask, and try to get the interview over with as quickly as possible.
  • Many poor quality interviews are chosen by HR, not the hiring manager:?These include compliance interviews set up to improve HR's statistics reported to government (scheduling interviews because you're unemployed, over 40, or other disadvantaged group), comparison interviews (see below), and interviews as favors to internal managers/employees (their contacts).
  • Poor quality interviews chosen by the hiring manager include comparison interviews:?Most organizations require that a hiring manager show due diligence before making a final hiring decision on a new hire, by interviewing a minimum number of comparison candidates. Hiring managers who have already identified top candidates choose less attractive applicants for comparison interviews, to justify their choice.


Whether your?interviews?are high or low?quality?usually depends on the process you used to apply for the interview. Online applications almost always lead to poor?quality?interviews. The way you've been taught to network also usually?leads to low?quality.
