How would you describe what you do in 5-13 words? ??
Your headline is one of the most critical parts of your LinkedIn profile.?
And did you know that your headline looks differently depending on where you’re looking on LinkedIn??
Let’s take a look:
This is what your headline looks like when scrolling through LinkedIn on your desktop.
You get a max of around 9 words before it gets cut off, meaning someone will have to click on your profile to read further.?
Actually, the sweet spot is likely around 7 words.
Your headline then expands to about 13 words on mobile:
If you’re scrolling through the network on LinkedIn (mobile and desktop), you can only see around 5-7 words.
So if 5,000 people have the same role as you - say a Leadership Coach - how are you going to stand out?
What will make someone click to view YOUR profile over the others.
Let's compare:
Headline #1: ?
Leadership Coach | Founder | Visionary
This is 4 words, and this?is how it will be viewed whether on LinkedIn’s network, desktop, or mobile.
Now, let’s look at:?
Headline #2: ?
Getting leaders up the proverbial.
This is 5 words if you’re viewing it on your desktop scrolling through the network.
What about mobile via your feed?
Getting leaders up the proverbial ladder in less than six months.
This is 11 words.
Now on mobile, it can be tricky. I’ve counted up to 19 words, usually with shorter words in the headlines like and, or, I..
But, this isn’t always the case, so to be safe, I’d try to fit everything within around 11 words.?

Now, how might this look via desktop via your feed?
Getting leaders up the proverbial ladder in.
There is likely going to be around 7 words before the cut off.
My question is: Which profile would you likely click on first.. #1 or #2? ??
The most intriguing headline (#2) is likely going to draw you in first before Headline #1.?
When finding the right words to form your headline, you have to get creative and stand out.?
Some tips to create a killer headline:
Oftentimes, we can’t find the right words that can grab attention, so we might need a little inspiration from our friendly thesaurus or a simple Google search can do the trick.
Utilize those online resources like ChatGPT to enhance those creative juices.?
3. Find balance. Make your headline simple but clickbait worthy. Not so simple as in the headline #1 above, but not so far out that people are totally confused about what you do.?
Be sure to use those 5-13 words wisely and USE up to those 13 words, if possible.
Don’t stop at 5.
Keep a simple file of all your headlines, and test them out frequently (say every 2 months) so you can see which headline gained more clicks to your profile.?
Hot tip: If you want to? know what your headline actually looks like?
Ask a friend or family member to send over a screenshot of what yours looks like in their feed,? like my hubby did below.
When was the last time you optimized your LinkedIn headline?
