Make Your 2025 Job Search Faster By Screening Out All Those Fake Jobs

It might surprise you that avoiding cover letters can accelerate your 2025 job search - here's why ...

Cover letters have been used as a standard tool for job seekers to customize their resume since before you were born. But HR technologies have made cover letters so obsolete that they can cause your resume to get rejected when you're qualified.

However, most job seekers still use them because they've heard from job search advisors that it's a must. Outplacement firms teach outdated job search methods including cover letters (their job is to keep you from suing your ex-employer and are mainly there for you to vent to them). Most career coaches/authors advise using cover letters, because they provide cover letter writing services. Friends/family give this advice to DIYers, because it's advice that they were given, but didn't realize that it slowed their searches.

Here are 3 reasons that avoiding cover letters can accelerate your 2025 job search:

  1. Purpose No Longer Valid: Cover letters made sense pre-internet and job boards. Then, most job seekers had their resume printed at a copy shop, so the only way to modify it was via a cover letter. Today, resumes are easy to customize and employers expect resumes that are customized to the job, rewarding those who do and penalize those who don't, so there's no longer a valid purpose for cover letters.
  2. ATSs Don't Keyword Search Cover Letters: I interviewed CEOs and VPs of the top Applicant Tracking System firms, and they all told me the same thing ... Their clients use ATSs to keyword search only one document, the resume. You should assume that anything you put on your cover letter isn't searchable by employers.
  3. Readers View Cover Letters As A Distraction - So Cover Letters Can Hurt: Your reader spends an average 15 seconds deciding to give you an interview spot or the discard pile - It's not enough time to read 2 documents. When you present a cover letter to an employer, they have to make a choice, because they can't read both. In recent studies, 97% of employers viewed cover letters as a distraction, while they found your features/benefits used to decide if you'll get an interview are in your resume. Since they only read one, send the one you want employers to read ... Your resume.

Even when employers ask or require cover letters, there are ways to satisfy requirements that are far more effective than cover letters and present a much lower chance of you getting screened out.
