Make Way for the Boss Ladies: Inspiring Next-Gen Female Architects

This week's newsletter is about exploring how women have claimed their place in the traditionally male-dominated AEC industry. We will speak about how female architects have made it to the top - against all odds.

The Story

Over the years, architecture and interior design have been considered purely labor-intensive professionals. Hence, it is a common misconception that because men are physically stronger, they are better suited for the role. But, in reality the profession is both physically and intellectually challenging and does not differentiate between genders. The creativity, inter-personal skills, and management abilities of the professional irrespective of their gender is what makes them suitable for the job.??

Identifying this issue, Sky-Frame has initiated the project “Women in Architecture” that sheds more light on the role of women in architecture by increasing their visibility and empowering them to realize their full potential. The firm has collaborated with filmmaker Boris Noir to develop a documentary that showcases the life of 3 female architects in 3 different countries at different stages of their career. The architects have been selected based on their passion for education, working with communities, and a sensibility towards the needs of society and the built environment. The documentary will focus on the challenges faced by women in the AEC industry such as their perspectives on being a woman in an industry led by men, how to balance work and private life, and general challenges women experience in the profession.

But, why a film? Here’s what Boris has to say.?

“Architecture is very emotional, very vibrant, both in the process of its creation and in its finished expression. The biggest challenge is to capture these emotions of something immobile in a motion picture, to let them have an effect on the viewer. The idea was to show the real life of architects. Who are the people behind the finished projects? How do they live? What drives them to make architecture, how do they inspire themselves? In our film "Women in Architecture," the viewer is taken on a twenty-minute journey to three very different world metropolises and breathes in the lives of our protagonists. The architecture, which plays a secondary role in our film, has a completely different effect as a result”.
