Make a Wall of Victory
Success brings more success. But it won’t ever be constant. It’s important to have concrete reminders of your victories, individually and as a team, to help keep motivation high. Remember that small victories are important too and make space for them next to the big victories.
Why is celebrating victory important? Remembering past successes is a great way to motivate better future performance.
Take my college days. While I was in school, I met someone who became a close friend, and eventually a coworker. But, at the time, we were both prone to feeling sorry for ourselves and self-sabotaging before exams and presentations with anxiety and doubt.
Instead of letting the negative feelings win, we would meet up before important tasks, lock the door, and shout compliments at each other.
We were each better at seeing the other’s better qualities and successes than we were at seeing them for ourselves. But those reminders made it easier to keep our best qualities in mind so that we could bring those strengths to the tasks we were most worried about.
A team wall of victory does the same thing. When your team is feeling nervous, worried, or stressed, you can all remind yourselves of the successes and victories you’ve built together in the past.
Why a Wall of Victory?
There are many reasons to cultivate a wall of victory. Starting with, success isn’t constant. You might be on a winning streak, but eventually something will shake the pattern and you’ll need to rebuild.
Economic downturns and slow seasons will affect almost every workplace sooner or later. Preparing for bad times, when morale will drop more easily, will make it easier to recover and move forward when it happens.
It’s also easy to let insecurity creep in, even when you’re on a success streak. Having those reminders of your victories ready at hand will make it easier to fight back against those insecurities. You can use your past victories as a way to motivate yourself, and your team.
You can even use it as inspiration for what your team’s best qualities are, so you can remind them.
Benefits of a Wall of Victory:
Most people naturally want to top themselves. Having reminders of past success will motivate your team to set higher goals as a group and individually.
It will also help cultivate a positive attitude, which is critical. People who feel good about work are more likely to feel confident voicing any complaints they might have. They’re also more likely to want to come into work and will be more willing to dedicate more of their time and energy to work.
You can also keep motivations and goals on your wall of victory, as victories to come. That way your staff will always have a clear vision of what they’re working toward.
You’ll find that your team starts organically building each other up when they have reminders of their best moments, big and small.
