Make them think it's their idea

Simple and Smart eh? Leadership from beyond is a curious and successful idea.

“It is better to lead from behind and put the others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur.” Nelson Mandela

This doesn’t require great slight of mouth, it is simply acknowledging others contributions to this hugely practical way forward.

Here is a narrative that often works “So we are all agreed reducing costs, growing revenues and enhancing service is a great way forward?” (Only the foolhardy would disagree with that) “…so I would like to recommend that we take your steer and implement by Tuesday next.”

Another somewhat more cunning “I am sure that you too, like me, wish to see this put in place.” Followed by a thank you for the idea and subsequent recommendation that you will take this forward on their behalf.

Working with kids sees this tactic work remarkably well. Or even our pets for that matter. The dog loves bringing you the ball for you to throw doesn’t he?

We all desire to be acknowledged for our contribution so use the tactic well.

Oh, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this excellent idea.
