Make something with your children - lessons learned
This summer, my youngest son asked me to build a piece of furniture together.
Doing so, I learned a few surprising things about the millenials:
- don't micro-manage : just advise them on mistakes you made (and what you learned from that) and they will learn fast and find their own solutions. They will see other problems than you, and together you can reach a quality you wouldn't reach on your own.
- in order to make sure the project would get completed, I found a simple incentive : I will pay for all expenses, but only if you finish the project. The idea of making something for 'free' works very well for the generation that already has lots of things for free...
- although the millenials are very 'digital', they still feel the joy of making something 'real', something tangible. From the response on Facebook, I could see that many of your kids, would love to do a project like this.
So, instead of shopping for Xmas gifts, think about making something yourself, with family or friends. As Charles Eisenstein said:
Joint consumption doesn’t create intimacy and connection. Only joint creativity can do that.
