To make a real impact.

Some weeks ago it was very cold in the Netherlands. Cold winds from the east and tempertures far below zero made it feel freezing cold. One morning when I got to work my fingers were half frozen and the wind nearly blew me from my bike. Just at that moment I saw a woman safely hidden in a warm coat. She saw me struggling. Then she did one thing I never forget: she smiled!

One moment that made my day. A moment of compassion that helped me going on.

How to say 'thank you?'

At my work I felt inspired to repay the smiling woman by doing something good, something extraordinary. I brought my colleagues a cup of coffee, I listened to the clients who were not listening to me and I greeted the janitor who never spoke to anyone. But at the end of the day I went home and I was not happy.

I tried so hard doing something good that I forgot to be me. Life is not about repay, feeling guilty or being what you think is expected from you. Life is about:

1 Being humble.

2 Being kind.

3 Sharing unconditionally.

That is what the smiling woman in the warm coat did. That is where I failed myself. It is about being yourself not about doing or acting what you think is required. If you be who you are then people will believe you. You can do anything. You feel happy and fulfilled. That is when you make a real impact.
