Make radical collaboration happen

Make radical collaboration happen

Radical Collaboration is a transformative approach that aims to create environments of trust and cooperation, ultimately turning groups into motivated and empowered teams. It advocates for a paradigm shift in the way individuals and groups interact, emphasizing the importance of collaboration over mere cooperation.

So, what does “radical” mean in this context? Derived from the Latin word “radix,” meaning “root,” radical refers to going to the root or fundamental aspects of something. In the context of collaboration, it implies going beyond surface-level interactions and diving into deeper, more meaningful connections.

What’s the difference between cooperation and collaboration?

Cooperation typically involves two or more groups or individuals working together while pursuing their own separate goals. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement where each party contributes towards a shared outcome but retains their distinct objectives.

On the other hand, collaboration transcends mere cooperation. It involves two or more groups or individuals working together with a single, common goal. Collaboration implies acting jointly, pooling resources, and leveraging collective strengths to achieve a shared objective. It goes beyond working together; it entails being together and fostering a sense of unity and cohesion.

Cooperation vs. Collaboration

To foster effective collaboration, 5 key elements come into play:

1: Apply a common, systematic and well-structured approach of thinking

A common, systematic, and well-structured approach to thinking and definitions are?essential for effective collaboration within an organization. This approach involves considering the interplay of structure, culture, and strategy, all of which are influenced by the company’s vision and external circumstances. It is crucial for every individual involved to understand these elements and how they work together to foster a collaborative and productive environment.

2: Follow proven principles of effectiveness

When seeking effectiveness and striving to make a meaningful impact, it is important to follow proven principles that guide our actions. These principles emphasize the importance of doing the right thing and focusing on results.

3: Foster certain habits and customs

To enhance effectiveness and create a positive impact, fostering certain habits and customs can be beneficial. Here are some examples:?

Custom of non-differentiation: This custom involves treating others with fairness and impartiality, regardless of their background, status, or differences. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, we foster a culture of respect, equality, and collaboration.

Custom of feeling powerful: This custom involves cultivating a sense of personal empowerment and agency. By believing in our own capabilities, we can take ownership of our actions and choices. Feeling powerful allows us to overcome challenges, make confident decisions, and take proactive steps towards achieving our goals.

Custom of ownership: This custom revolves around taking responsibility for our actions, decisions, and outcomes. By accepting accountability, we recognize that we have the power to influence and shape our circumstances. This custom encourages a proactive mindset, where we actively seek solutions, learn from mistakes, and continuously strive for improvement.?

4: Learn and improve supportive skills

To enhance effectiveness and create a supportive environment, it is important to continually learn and improve supportive skills. Here are some that can contribute to personal and professional growth:

Maintain a collaborative intention: Approach interactions and collaborations with a mindset focused on cooperation and mutual success. Maintain an attitude of willingness to work together, listen to others’ perspectives, and find common ground. This collaborative intention fosters a culture of teamwork, trust, and shared accomplishments.

Be open and honest: Foster an environment of transparency and trust by practicing open and honest communication. Share information, ideas, and feedback in a constructive and respectful manner. Being open and honest encourages meaningful dialogue, builds trust, and strengthens relationships within teams and across stakeholders.

Be self-accountable: Take ownership of your actions, decisions, and commitments. Hold yourself accountable for meeting deadlines, delivering on promises, and taking responsibility for the outcomes of your work. Being self-accountable promotes a culture of reliability and trustworthiness, inspiring others to do the same.

Be self-aware: Cultivate self-awareness by reflecting on your strengths, weaknesses, values, and emotions. Understand how your actions and behaviors impact others and the collaborative dynamics. Self-awareness allows you to adapt, grow, and continuously improve your supportive skills. It also helps you better understand and empathize with others, contributing to stronger relationships and effective collaborations.

Negotiate appropriately and strengthen relationships: Develop negotiation skills that focus on finding win-win solutions and building strong relationships. Seek to understand the needs and interests of all parties involved, and work towards mutually beneficial outcomes. Effective negotiation fosters a sense of respect, trust, and cooperation, strengthening relationships and fostering a collaborative environment.

5: Push enabling attitudes

By embracing enabling attitudes—standing up for yourself, realizing your choices, avoiding blame, seeking higher meaning, being comfortable with solitude, not taking things too seriously, and being your own best friend—you can create a positive and empowering mindset that supports personal growth and fulfillment. These attitudes contribute to self-empowerment, resilience, and a greater sense of well-being.

In summary, Radical Collaboration is an approach that seeks to foster trust, cooperation, and meaningful connections within groups, transforming them into motivated and empowered teams. By emphasizing collaboration over mere cooperation, it encourages a paradigm shift in the way individuals and groups interact. The term "radical" in this context signifies going to the fundamental aspects of collaboration, going beyond surface-level interactions to establish deeper connections.

Christoph Kullnig I like the article and your approach to radical collaboration! However, the biggest obstacle in organisations still seems to be that individual achievements of one team or leader are honored more than joint efforts. This is a cultural hurdle that needs to be overcome.
