We all have a carbon footprint. In broad terms the amount of CO2 that is released into the atmosphere because we exist; we breathe, we eat, we travel, we use energy for light and heat, we live in buildings and consume goods and services. What is my Carbon Footprint?

Your Carbon Footprint is measured in Kg of CO2 released into the atmosphere. 1kg of CO2 would fill two bath tubs and a typical person has a Carbon Footprint of 12,000 kg of CO2 each year.

You can use the Carbon Calculator to calculate your exact Carbon Footprint - basically the more you use cars and aeroplanes, the bigger your house, the more processed and packaged food you eat, the more you buy food transported from overseas, the more you use non renewable energy sources and inefficient electrical devices, the higher your footprint.

A globetrotting executive may have a carbon footprint of 50,000kg (50 Tonnes); a careful and eco conscious consumer who avoids flying and cycles to work may have a carbon footprint as low as 4000kg (4 tonnes)

What does Pledging Net Zero Involve?

It means reducing your carbon footprint to ZERO. 

This cannot be achieved by behavioural changes alone. Whatever we do we will have a carbon footprint; the aim is to reduce your footprint by doing things differently..and offset the balance by taking action to re green the planet - because we all know that trees and plants take CO2 out of the atmosphere. This is called Carbon Sequestration.

How do I Pledge NetZero with Ark2030?

Throughout the year Ark2030 will provide guidance hints and tips on reducing your carbon footprint, providing some clear actions which you can use to reduce your points balance.

Eg We will invite you to switch energy supplier so that your electricity comes from renewable sources (its the same electricity coming down your cable - its just that the wind and solar companies get your money; so they grow and the coal oil and gas suppliers fade away)

As you make progress towards reducing your Carbon Footprint your profile changes colour to reflect the cooling down of the planet. From Red to Orange and finally Blue - you are helping to keep the world cool.

As you begin to reduce your points balance it will become clear what your baseline carbon footprint is; a figure that you cannot reduce any further through behavioural changes: this is offset time
