Make Meetings More Neuroinclusive
Hi everyone!
It’s been a wee while since the last article for this newsletter, but I’m back, and I want to chat about something super important - making our work meetings more neuroinclusive.
Let’s face it, meetings can be a bit of a drag sometimes, and for those of us who are neurodivergent, they can be even trickier. So, here are some easy ways we can make our meetings a lot more friendly for everyone involved:
1. Share the Agenda Ahead of Time
Sending out the meeting agenda before we gather is a great way to help everyone prepare. It gives folks a chance to think things through and get ready for the chat - especially helpful for anyone who needs a bit more time to process.
2. Keep It Simple
When we’re chatting, let’s aim for clear and straightforward language. Avoiding jargon and complicated phrases can make a world of difference, so everyone can stay in the loop without feeling lost.
3. Mix Up Participation Styles
Not everyone feels comfortable jumping in with their thoughts right away. Let’s offer different ways to participate, whether that’s writing comments down, having small group discussions, or even giving feedback anonymously. Everyone should feel free to contribute in their own way.
4. Mind the Sensory Stuff
Let’s remember that meeting spaces can be a bit overwhelming for some. If we can, let’s choose quieter spots, adjust the lighting, and keep an eye on temperature. It’s all about creating a comfy environment for everyone.
5. Plan for Breaks
Long meetings can really take it out of us, can’t they? A quick break here and there gives everyone a chance to recharge and gather their thoughts. It helps prevent that brain overload!
6. Use Visual Aids
Visuals can really help bring our points home. Using slides, charts, or handouts makes it easier for folks to follow along and understand the conversation. It’s all about making information accessible.
7. Open Up the Dialogue
Creating a culture where everyone feels comfortable talking about their needs is key. Let’s encourage feedback on what’s working and what could be better. We all want to feel included, right?
8. Get the Team Trained Up
A bit of training on neurodiversity can go a long way. It helps us understand different communication styles and the importance of being inclusive. It’s all about building empathy and awareness within our teams.
9. Be Flexible with Timings
Different folks have different productivity peaks. Some of us are morning people, while others shine in the afternoon. Let’s be open to varying meeting times to suit everyone’s energy levels.
10. Celebrate Our Differences
Let’s take the time to appreciate the unique perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to the table. Celebrating successes and contributions fosters a positive, inclusive culture where everyone feels valued.
So there you have it! By putting these simple ideas into practice, we can make our meetings more inclusive and welcoming for everyone. After all, it’s not just about making adjustments, it’s about creating a space where everyone feels like they belong.
Thanks for taking the time to read this! Let’s keep the conversation going and work together to make our workplace as inclusive as possible.
Cheers!
