Today is National Outdoors Day, and there’s no better way to celebrate than to go to a beautiful park and walk. National Outdoors Day is an unofficial holiday dedicated to celebrating and promoting outdoor activities and the appreciation of nature. This observance encourages people to spend time outside and engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, biking, and nature walks.?
June is also Great Outdoors Month! Hiking and visiting nature parks are more than just a hobby; they have a deeply beneficial influence on my mental and physical health.?
There are countless reasons why I wanted to spotlight this day, but here are a few main ones.?
1. Nature’s Symphony
The rhythmic crunch of gravel underfoot, the whisper of the wind through the trees, and the melodious chorus of birds create a symphony that no concert hall can replicate. Each hike is an immersive experience, a chance to lose myself in the natural orchestra that soothes my mind and rejuvenates my spirit. The forest becomes my sanctuary, offering a peaceful retreat from the cacophony of everyday life.
2. A Feast for the Eyes
Every hike provides me with visual stimulation and joy! All the vibrant colors that can be captured by memory or a photograph across each session. The view lookout points with its sweeping panoramas and breathtaking vistas, is a reward that words can hardly capture. These moments of sheer beauty remind me why I fell in love with hiking in the first place. (Seeing some cute dogs enjoying themselves as well!)?
3. Physical and Mental Well-being
Hiking is the perfect blend of exercise and meditation. The physical effort of climbing trails and navigating rocky paths strengthens my body and boosts my endurance (and makes me more motivated to enjoy a delicious meal after!) But beyond the physical benefits, hiking also works wonders for my mental health. It clears my mind, reduces stress, and provides a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to find elsewhere. The trail becomes a place where I can breathe deeply and think freely. The feeling of gratitude is overwhelming when I make it back to my car and blast the A/C. I am thrilled to be working at Rivia Mind, which recognizes the positive impact nature has on your mental health. To learn more about the Mental Health Benefits Of Nature in the Rivia Wellness Blog.
4. Unplugged Adventures
In this world dominated by screens and constant connectivity, hiking offers a much-needed digital detox. While I would never want to hike where there is no cell service, there’s something incredibly impactful to not having my head staring at colors on a screen and, instead, seeing the colors of the world.?
5. Bonding with Fellow Hikers
Hiking isn’t just a solitary pursuit; it’s also a fantastic way to connect with others. Whether it’s joining a local hiking group or embarking on adventures with friends, the shared experience of conquering trails and exploring new terrains forges strong bonds. The camaraderie on the trail, the shared stories of getting caught in the rain, and the collective appreciation of nature create lasting memories and friendships. I have countless fond, fun, and fascinating memories with friends who I have hiked with.?
6. Discovering Hidden Gems
Every hike can lend itself to a journey of discovery. From stumbling across waterfalls, private oases, and hidden caves to witnessing rare wildlife (or being startled by a snake!). These hidden gems are the treasures of the trail. Each hike creates a story filled with surprises and wonders that fuel my passion and provide fulfillment.?
7. Respect and Conservation
Hiking fosters a deep respect for nature and a commitment to conservation. Witnessing the beauty and fragility of the environment firsthand instills a desire to protect and preserve it. By following Leave No Trace principles and advocating for sustainable practices, I contribute to the conservation efforts that ensure future generations can enjoy the same pristine landscapes. Hiking has become not just a pastime but a way to give back to the planet. This article is my little wave of impact to anyone who get inspired to go outside and embrace nature.?
8. The Thrill of the Challenge
Every hike presents a unique challenge, whether it’s a steep ascent, a rugged terrain, or a long-distance trek. (Maybe even dodging some spiders or the mini-heart attack from avoiding a snake… only for it to be a branch) Overcoming these obstacles is immensely satisfying and boosts my confidence. Each trail conquered is a testament to my determination and resilience. The thrill of pushing my limits and achieving my goals is a powerful motivator that keeps me eager for the next adventure.
Meaningful Memories in Movement
On this National Outdoors Day, I honor my appreciation for nature and the countless ways I have enjoyed it. My cherished memories of going for walks with my late Mom, to the adventures I have had with friends at our hometown reservation. I hope you make some meaningful memories of movement outside.?
