Make like a tree and leave.....
Okay, okay.....sorry for the cheesy Back to the Future Reference, but I thought it ties in nicely to this post. If you check out the article Why Can't We Sit Still, you'll read about how activity with respect to rudimentary functions has a significant impact in the workplace, one that's shifting how offices function as well as highlights the inherent health benefits.
I won't go into all of the details, as the article is long (and interesting) enough. I will however recount one quick story: About a year ago, three of my friends came over to my house for some drinks and a game of dominoes. Unfortunately, we didn't have a suitable table to play on. After thinking about it, we decided that the island counter would work but the chairs were too low. So we stood.....and played. Now, more than a year later, all four of us (still) absolutely agree that it was the most engaging, exciting, and memorable game we've ever played. All because we were standing.
More recently, just the other day my wife drew my attention to a new apparatus that elevates your computer from the desk surface to a height which would require you to stand. All with the push of a button. Apparently, somebody seems to think that standing while typing is a new craze......
Having personally experienced the effects of "standing" on one's performance definitely resonates after reading this article. I can only imagine the benefits on employees, culture, quality of work product, etc. Can you imagine a workplace without chairs????? I'm starting to think its possible.
