Whoever said libraries were just for keeping things quiet, clearly hasn’t met the new wave of school librarians! At the recent masterclass “Beyond Books and Walls: Unpacking the Role of the 21st Century Librarian,” we dived into the world of making libraries as fun as they are functional, especially for children.
Step 1: Forget the ‘Shh’ Rule
Let’s be honest: Kids aren’t coming to the library to nap. We learned that a children-first approach means embracing noise—a little chatter, excitement, and the occasional happy squeal over a cool storybook. Think colorful reading corners, comfy beanbags, and walls that whisper adventure!
Step 2: Storybooks Are Not Just for Bedtime
Bringing books to life was the name of the game. We got into the nitty-gritty of how a library is more than a room with shelves. It’s a gateway to worlds unknown. So why not make it magical??
Librarians left the session buzzing with ideas on how to transform simple storytime into unforgettable journeys. One suggestion? Turn reading into interactive games, complete with costumes, or even acting.

In a nutshell…
The masterclass reminded us that when it comes to kids, a library should be less about strict silence and more about inspiring a little chaos (the fun kind). With the tools and ideas shared, school libraries can now be places where kids don’t just read; they experience
