"Make It A Good Day"

"Have a good day!" we cheerfully say to others.
But did you know that you can actually cultivate the skill that is hidden it that pleasantry?
There's a saying that goes like this: "One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day." It's attributed to the Dalai Lama but I can't be sure about that.
Anyway, there is a real power in choosing that "one small positive thought." Research in the area of resilience has produced an awareness of the capability we have to shift our mood and thereby improve our happiness, health and well-being.
For example, the work done by Martin Seligman and his team at the University of Pennsylvania on optimism is very interesting. They have developed a simple method called "Hunt the Good Stuff."
Here's how you do it:
Each day, say in the morning (or anytime you want to do it), think of one good thing (or three good things, as Seligman suggests) that recently happened in your life.
Record it in a journal or on your calendar.
Reflect on this good thing, asking yourself these questions:
领英推荐
o??Why did this good thing happen?
o??What does this good thing mean to you?
o??What you can do tomorrow to enable more of this good thing?
o??In what ways did you or others contribute to this good thing?
Following the reflection step, Seligman's team recommends sharing the good thing with others. Tell it like a story. Spread the good things (and the good feelings) to others.
This last step is called Savoring the Moments. Slowing down and savoring the positive moments in life has been found to be very good for you. And for those around you.
Seligman's team has found that when you do this for a few days, it is self-reinforcing. You want to keep on doing it. It shifts your thinking from negative to positive. It adds to your resilience. And that is not a bad thing.
About the author: Terrence "Terry" Seamon is fascinated by this emerging body of knowledge about resilience and well-being. He is looking to apply it in his work with job hunters, career changers, and others facing adversity.

2 年Great article Terry and thanks for tagging me this morning. I read the article and found it fascinating. Interestingly enough something good did happen to me yesterday. I pondered the three questions that you included in the newsletter and really thought I could extend yesterday’s event to today and in the future. I can see this application in so many areas of life, everything from the job seeker to those going through adversity and those just looking for a bit of uplifting . Your wisdom is always a welcome addition to my day. Hope you have a great day!
