Make flexible work, work for you

Melissa is a Teacher and Educational Leader at our Goodstart Early Learning Old Reynella centre. Hear from Melissa how she embraces flexibility to achieve a work/life balance that works for her.

What arrangements do you have in place to achieve work/life balance?

Currently, I work 38 hours over four days and have Mondays off.

What is the benefit to you for doing this?

By working 38 hours over four days it allows me to have the extra day to run errands, relax before starting my working week, and spend more time with my partner and my family.

How did you find the process of requesting these work hours?

My director was super flexible, she listened to which day off would suit me, how the 38 hours would fit into four days and how that would look regarding my shifts each day, so I am able to have time for myself either in the mornings or still after work.

What does having this day off enable you to do?

Weekends can still be quite busy with running errands, spending time with my partner, and watching him play footy. Mondays off allow me to have a me day, sleep in, go to the gym, and relax before starting the working week again.

Do you feel like you have a good work/life balance because of this?

Yes, I am most refreshed for the working week, and I am able to have more time to enjoy my weekends and spend time with my loved ones after I finish all my errands.
