Make Exercise Exciting

Make Exercise Exciting

By Radhika Bhirani

Having a routine is part and parcel of being disciplined. But tell me to do the same thing every day, and I will almost run for life! That’s how yoga made me feel at one point. Welcome to Health Shots InFocus, your weekly dose of wellness. This time, my focus is on the need to tailor your exercise routine to your pace and mental space.

Let me admit, yoga became boring for me beyond a point. The yoga teacher would come every morning. He would make me do warm-up exercises that reminded me of PT lessons at school. He would make me focus on random nooks and corners of the house. I would end up finding cobwebs rather than feel calmer in my head. This was followed by the same breathing exercises and asanas every single day. Beyond that point, I decided, “This is not for me”. I need something more exciting – Zumba or Bhangra, maybe. Even a walk with peppy music would be better. Or twisting on the tummy twister to some music. Yeah, I love it!

The whole reason why I am sharing my personal experience is to remind you that when you choose to exercise, it is important to do what makes you feel happy. When it feels like a drill, it can be harder to do. I have nothing against yoga. But I sincerely realised that a teacher who could adjust the routine to my liking, would have changed my approach to it.

Some people just like their fitness routine to be fun. It is also why we see the sale of fitness props and wearable tech increase, isn’t it? Not every workout session has to be Plain Jane, after all. If you prefer yoga with a yoga wheel a la Alia Bhatt, so be it. If you’d rather get an exercise stepper at home than climb stairs, it’s okay. As long as you do something to move and make the needle move, make your choice unapologetically. Leaving you with this little ‘health shot’ for the week!
