Make A Difference Wherever You Go

Make A Difference Wherever You Go

At Spartan, we’re all about making a difference. We aim to make a difference in our own lives, in the lives of other Spartans, in our communities, and around the world.

Someone recently asked me an interesting question, “What if the really successful cities and towns reached out to those that were not as fortunate and lent a hand?”

It’s a wild idea, but completely on point. How can we all come together and help those that are less fortunate in a big way? It starts with the little things...

It all starts with you. Every single one of you.

The little things that you do to be better or to help others add up over time, and they can make a huge difference. There’s no reason that we all can’t be just 1% better each day. By taking some small steps, we can help ourselves and our neighbors, whether they’re down the street or one town over, and we can change the world.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to make a difference wherever you go:

Work it out.

Most of us spend an average of 90,000 hours of our lifetime at work. That’s a lot of time, especially if the majority of it is spent frustrated, overworked or just plain miserable.

I’ve learned through lots of mistakes over the decades that clear, respectful communication can make all the difference in the workplace. Think about it. You probably spend almost as much time with your coworkers as you do with your family, and a bad interaction with your colleagues could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Here are some really simple ways you can make those interactions the motivational boost that you and your colleagues need:

·      When you finish a pot of coffee, make a new one.

·      Say good morning.

·      Ask for feedback and genuinely use it to better your work and yourself.

·      Help keep the office clean.

·      Give praise for good work.

·      Always say thank you.

Bring it on home.

Creating a culture of giving at home is one of the most important ways you can make a difference. If you have kids, they look to you as a role model, and when they grow up in a home that is giving and compassionate, they take those lessons out into the world as they grow older. In fact, just talking to children about giving is the single most effective way to encourage philanthropy.

Here are some easy ways to make a difference at home:

·      Share chores like cleaning and cooking. Take turns or do them together as a family.

·      Read every night with your kids.

·      Encourage healthy eating and habits.

·      Be respectful of each other, even when you’re mad.

Communication leads to community.

When it comes to your community, it is what you make of it. Whether you’re focused on cleaning up the environment, giving to those less fortunate, or improving community programs, you can make significant changes.

Often, making a difference isn’t about giving anything; it’s about how you communicate. Be respectful and listen to others. Those two things can make a difference wherever you go.

Want to get involved and make a lasting difference in your community? Start here:

·      Say hello to your neighbors.

·      Pick up garbage you see along the way to work.

·      Use paper instead of plastic.

·      Attend local community meetings.

·      Run for political office.

How will you give back today? Share with me in the comments!
