Make Change Easy

Make Change Easy

Dear Essentialists,

One of the obstacles to incorporating Essentialism is that people think change is hard

Enter BJ Fogg, PhD. He's the heavyweight champion of how to make change easy through what he calls Tiny Habits, a New York Times bestselling author and the founder of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University.

If you'd like to wave a magic wand and be an essentialist, this episode is for you here.

To create an essential habit right now, here are the first steps:

1) Ask, "What is something highly important that I already want to change?"

2) Select an anchor. Something from your existing routine like washing your hands, brushing your teeth, eating breakfast or listening to a podcast.

3) Choose a tiny version of the behavior you want to have. Something you could do in under a minute. One woman started working out by marching in place for one minute while watching TV.

4) Celebrate instantly. Say, "You did it!" or "Nice!" or "You're brilliant!"

5) Repeat

Thank you, really, for reading.

Greg

p.s. A shout out to David P. who tweeted this week that he found the episode with BJ to be a "Fascinating and refreshing conversation. Greg, you're a magician." I won't take credit for that but I do think there was magic in this episode. Listen and subscribe here.

Simple yet doable. This is how we change a behaviour until it becomes a habit.
