The average person makes about 2,000 decisions every hour.
Most are benign and involuntary, but some require serious consideration and have real consequences.
Becoming well versed at making good decisions is a skill that can be cultivated, and one that can prevent many of the problems that inhibit people from making personal and professional advancements.
Being better at making good decisions requires recognition of the obstacles that often interfere with excellent judgment.
Learning to take command of our life requires vigilance and self-discipline.
Avoiding problems that inhibit progress often involves making wise decisions.?
Ironically, many of these decisions have historical precedence, but we ignore the warning signs.
So how can we get better at making good decisions?
“Unsuccessful people make decisions based on their current situation; successful people make decisions based on where they want to be.”
Here are 7 things we can do to become better at decision making:
Fatigue
Research has shown doctors, judges and parole officers perform better early in the day. As the day progresses many of us encounter mental fatigue, which compromises our ability to make good decisions.? The best way to prevent decision fatigue, make big choices early in the day when energy is peaking.
Distractions
Technology is our worst enemy when it comes to making big decisions.? A steady stream of information and noise makes it difficult to apprehend the space necessary to make big choices.? We need time to focus on big decisions without distractions.? Unplug and find the time to let your mind grasp the magnitude of big choices.??
Advice
Having quality friends is critically important.?? When it comes to making big decisions, great friends are imperative.? We need to bounce big decisions off trusted friends and get their feedback.? At work, relying on other remarkable minds before making big decisions is equally as important.? Elicit input from trusted advisors and rely on wisdom before making big choices.? Many people seek advice from people that lack the insight and perspicacity to enhance the validity of our choices.
“Don’t base your decisions on the advice of those who don’t have to deal with the results.”
Patience
I have shared with you before the benefits of sleeping on big decisions.? The 24-hour rule allows our mind to rest and process big choices.? When we wake up, we have the clarity and more conviction to make better decisions, without the raw emotions of acting on impulse.?
Focus
We have discussed the dangers of multi-tasking.? The misconceptions about multi-tasking are prevalent.? Many people celebrate their ability to juggle multiple things in the spirit of efficiency.? However, science says something different.? Our brains don’t “multitask”, they get distracted.? Big decisions require time to focus.?
Rational
Big decisions are often accompanied by a myriad of emotions that complicate making a choice.? Anger, frustration, irritation, impatience can interfere with making good decisions as we lose self-control and allow emotions to take over.?? We need to fight against the urge to react emotionally and allow our rational brain to contribute to the process of big decisions.? Walk away and get our minds right before making a big choice.??
Paralysis
Having a plethora of information at our disposal can seem useful, until it becomes a liability. Many people overanalyze everything, to the point of exhaustion.? Once we gather the facts, learn to trust our intuition, and rely on trusted advisors to guide our decisions, we employ wisdom and critical thought.? Once we are at peace with a decision, move ahead.? Be determined in our choices but remain flexible in our approach.????? ?
“Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same.”
Sum it up.
