Make this 1 Lifestyle Hack to Make a Huge Impact on Your Well-Being

“You’re The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With”

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously said this quote.

Let me add a 6th element to it that plays a pivotal role in shaping us— Environment!

Any physical surroundings— be it your workplace, home setup, family gathering, favorite library, and whatnot, can subconsciously affect our day-to-day conduct — if exposed to it for a prolonged period.

And tweaking a portion of that surrounding can trick you into picking a new behavior.

Putting this thesis to the test, I started keeping a big water bottle at my work desk.

And guess what?

I haven’t felt pain in the left side of my abdomen since my kidney stone operation eight years ago.

Because since then, I have been drinking an entire bottle twice a day, and this has helped to keep those kidney stones from not forming again.

I slightly adjusted my surroundings, and my subconscious picked it up as a routine.

This concept is well proven in books like Atomic Habits, which suggests how an environmental setting tricks you into developing a routine; all you have to do is consciously plant a cue in the first place.

This is the same psychology applied in marketing tactics- where you see chocolate bars near the grocery checkout counters to compel customers to reward themselves after shopping spree.

Using the same principle:

  • I exercise in the gym instead of at home because the gym atmosphere pushes me to pick weights even if I feel dull, which I might skip doing at home.
  • I got a dedicated writing desk setup, because of which I can now consistently churn out content on LinkedIn, Medium and Quora.

So look out for cues in your external setting, tweak them a bit, and experience change :)
