The Major Threats are Still Here!
Like many of you, I sit at my desk in my home office trying to continue working hard at my profession. Like you, I think about what the future will bring for my company, my team, my family and myself. Will things turn back to normal in a few weeks leaving us with a hill to climb but thankful it's not a mountain? Or will this blind side bullet train find new fuel to cause a greater decent into collapse and chaos? Almost exactly two months ago the Dow was at $29,568...AN ALL TIME HIGH! And now, maintaining business, keeping the bills paid and ignoring the ever growing need (hopefully you're not there yet) to tap into savings, retirement, investments or college funds is becoming the new norm. Who'd have thought two months ago we'd now be home schooling our children and in a daily struggle to stay healthy both physically and mentally. "Social Distancing" is a thing now! Isn't this the time were should be looking forward to showing off the hard work we put in the gym as we get ready for summer vacations, corporate incentive trips and the time honored tradition of the Memorial Day Bar-B-Que?
Amid all of this fear and uncertainty, it's both equally important and comforting that we instinctually can and do return to our core values; as humans, as families, as communities and as citizens of the greatest country that ever existed in the history of mankind...this, United States of America! It is said that 'youth is wasted on the young'. While that may be true to some, it is only with age and experience that we realize that in this amazing life we have been given, there are but two things we have absolute control over: Our Actions and Our Attitude.....and we must fight every second of every day to learn how to keep them both POSITIVE! "Fear does not stop death. It stops life. And worrying does not take way tomorrow's troubles. It takes away peace."
To that end, when we take a step back and COUNT OUR BLESSINGS we see opportunity. We see good and we even realize that things might not be as absolutely horrible as they seem. Now, I'm not discounting in any way the tragic deaths, job loss and economic impact that has occurred as a result of Covid-19. I simply point out that WE have a choice every day. We can choose to look for the POSITIVE instead of focusing only on the negative. One of my favorite quotes is from Denzel Washington. In a red carpet interview he said, "Anything you practice you'll get good at. Including B.S.!" WOW! Talk about truth! Positive or negative, anything you practice you'll get good at. For example, you can look at the stock market and listen to the media and think "Everything is crashing. I'm losing everything!" or you can realize that approximately 4 short years ago, in 2016, the Dow was only at $15,973...over $13,000 below our all time high and nearly $8,000 from where we are today. We must remember "Things are never as good as they seem, but they are also never as bad as they seem." Time heals all wounds and this too shall pass.
However, as we grow we must learn as well. Having a positive attitude does not mean we simply ignore facts. It's not all imaginary butterflies and unicorns. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Having a positive attitude gives us the ability to take ownership and plan as much as possible for the things that we can't control. It's the ability to be cleared eyed about what we can control and have the right attitude regardless of the situation or environment. This brings me to the point of this article. A very intelligent and talented colleague of mine, Ayshe Tayfun, shared an interesting visual statistic created by Robert Martin.

This animated graphic highlights the fact that even with the Covid-19 arrival and very likely long after it becomes a distant nightmare, the MAJOR THREATS ARE STILL HERE! As this shows, before the corona virus, during and remaining afterward, three major threats: HEART DISEASE, CANCER AND ACCIDENTS account for more daily deaths in the US than all other factors combined!
So what can we, what should we do? Here a 4 keys to protecting yourself and your family from these MAJOR THREATS!
- Think Positive - Positive vibes keep stress low which keeps cortisol levels low. Also, the Law of Attraction tells us that what we think about most we attract. Plus, who likes to be around negative people?
- Act Positive - Follow a schedule. Exercise and eat healthy. Feed your mind with good books and music. Laugh and communicate with friends and loved ones. Reconnect with yourself, your partner, your kids, friends and family. Stay away from the doom & gloom. You can't do anything about it anyway!
- Educate Yourself - Learn how to improve your odds against Heart Disease and Cancer. What risk factors can you manage, avoid or transfer to lessen the likelihood of an Accident? Research your family history to learn what your risk factors are. What steps can you take to improve your health and prevent disease? Information is everywhere if you take the time to look.
- Protect your Assets, Family and Future - Your health insurance, if you have it, is designed to pay the doctors and hospitals. And for the most part, it does a good job keeping them in business. But what about you and your family? Who pays you to keep you and your family in business? In the event of a HEART ATTACK, STROKE, CANCER, ACCIDENT and even COVID-19 many resort to their savings, investments, retirement, college funds or even sell personal property to pay deductibles, co-insurance, keep the roof over their head, bills paid, gas in the car and food on the table. You don't have to do any of this. The BEST WAY to protect Family, Future and Assets is a SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE POLICY that pays CASH DIRECTLY TO YOU to keep your family in business.
