Major Mexican Airport Hit by Cyberattack

One of Mexico's busiest airports, Querétaro Intercontinental Airport, has been hit by a cyberattack. The airport confirmed the attack in a social media post on Tuesday, saying that it had called in experts to help address the issue.

Officials said that the cyberattack was traced back to an employee downloading a file containing malware. However, they claimed that the airport's operational security was not compromised and that any information stolen was "in the public domain."

The ransomware gang LockBit has taken credit for the attack and threatened to leak the stolen data on November 27. LockBit has also claimed to have stolen data from multibillion-dollar airplane maker Boeing, but Boeing has not released any further updates on the incident.

The aviation industry is a regular target of cyberattacks. In the past month alone, Air Canada and Air Europa have both dealt with incidents. In September, European aerospace giant Airbus said it was investigating a cybersecurity incident after a hacker posted information on 3,200 of the company's vendors to the dark web.

Other airlines that have faced cybersecurity incidents in recent years include Scandinavian Airlines, India's SpiceJet, and Air India. Jeppesen, a wholly owned Boeing subsidiary that provides navigation and flight planning tools, confirmed last November that it was dealing with a cybersecurity incident that caused some flight disruptions.

Accelya, a technology provider for many large airlines, said last year that it experienced a ransomware attack tied to the BlackCat group. And last August, Bangkok Airways said that hackers had stolen passenger information during a security breach following a ransomware incident.

The cyberattack on Querétaro Intercontinental Airport is a reminder of the growing threat that cyberattacks pose to the aviation industry. Airlines and other aviation organizations need to take steps to protect their systems and data from attack.
