Major construction projects for 2023: Upgrading healthcare in the east US

Our world is evolving at a rapid pace. However, without a constant stream of construction and infrastructure projects to facilitate this evolution, we run the risk of being left behind. And as it stands, the healthcare industry needs urgent attention.

With new diseases to cure and the constant development of new treatments and technologies, it’s never been so critical for the healthcare industry to ramp up their investments and expand on their facilities.?

Though projects are occurring left, right and centre, all over the globe, here we’re focusing on what’s happening along in the east US. So, what’s in store and what healthcare projects should we be on the lookout for?

Major contributors to healthcare construction in 2023

Healthcare construction is on the up, boasting strong momentum and plenty of big projects - despite various obstacles such as inflation, supply chain struggles and more.?

Hospitals make up the largest proportion of healthcare projects, but that’s not to say other facilities such as nursing homes and standalone clinics don’t make the cut.?

So, let’s take a look at which companies are set to shake up the market in 2023 with major healthcare projects. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list.?

Turner Construction

A highly-acclaimed name throughout all aspects of the construction industry - particularly healthcare - Turner Construction is leading the way for improved, expanded healthcare facilities in the US. Working on over 300 healthcare projects a year, Turner is transforming the industry for patients of all ages, alongside doctors, nurses, caregivers, scientists, researchers and more.

A major project for 2023, Turner Construction is embarking on Phase III of the Maine Medical Center Expansion, targeted for completion at the end of 2023. Impressively, this expansion will involve the construction of a new 270,000 sq ft inpatient tower, housing 96 beds and 19 procedure rooms - all of which will be welcome news for the healthcare sector.?

Additionally, the facility will be equipped with surgery spaces, imaging laboratories and more - all in a bid to forge the way for a healthier world.

Brasfield & Gorrie LLC

Highly-acclaimed and multiple award-winning, Brasfield & Gorrie LLC is a key player in hospital work in planning and construction. With many projects underway, and almost 1,200 healthcare projects completed in the past decade, it’s no surprise that B&G has projects underway for the upcoming years.?

For instance, the new Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital project, located in Florida. The new facility is set to focus on women’s health, with state-of-the-art, specialist features - such as labour and delivery and a future neonatal intensive unit. Sized at a huge 320,000 ft, featuring two six-storey towers, the facility will be equipped with 180 beds, with the ability to expand to 240 beds in total.?

Working alongside HKS Architects, Inc., the team at B&G expect the new facility to be complete in late spring 2024.

Skanska?

Skanska - global construction and development firm - has lot’s in store for the next few years, with billions of dollars of work going into their healthcare construction facilities. They pride themselves on their three-pronged approach to construction, one that’s made for “patients, for outcomes and for efficiency”.?

First up, the new Orlando Health Jewett Hospital - based in Florida. An eight-storey building with 75 inpatient rooms and 10 operating rooms, this will be a combined inpatient and outpatient facility, dedicated to the care of orthopaedic patients. Expected to provide the most advanced care to over 250,000 patients a year, work is set for completion in 2023.

Similarly, back in December 2022, Skanska signed a contract with CHRISTUS Health to expand their Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-Westover Hills Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Worth $95 million, the project will be fulfilled in three phases which includes new parking, a bed tower addition and a renovation to an existing floor. Construction began in January 2023, and is predicted to reach completion by February 2025; it’s one to watch.?

Another one to add to Skanska’s list of accolades, the business has just signed a contract to renovate a healthcare facility in New York - worth $52 million. A multiphase renovation, the project is set to improve the local community’s health and wellbeing through new offices, common spaces and laboratories. Construction is now underway, and completion is set for May 2025.
