Maintaining a sense of Purpose

Maintaining a sense of Purpose

Myself is Vijay Singh and I’m a Purpose Coach and Trainer, specializing in Management and Personal development. Today we’re going to be understanding how you can maintain a sense of purpose when working from home. This topic same to mind post an interesting conversation with my coachee on monday around how work from home has changed everything around us and how can we maintain balance with the new ways of working.

It’s amazing how much of our lives we spend at work. Over your lifetime, it will be an average of over 82,000 hours and if you add up all of the distance people spend commuting, you’d almost reach the moon. The pandemic saw a working situation change forever. For many of us, some style of hybrid working has become the norm. Although there’s no doubt, most people welcome the greater flexibility. It does mean we need to be able to manage on time and personal energy now in a different way.

While, hybrid working is the company new norm. It’s good to check in with ourselves to ensure that some of the choices that we made out of necessity are going to continue deserve us long term. The people who generally got their energy from the outside, it’s important that we maintain healthy social relationships with friends and colleagues that don’t feel drained by a lack of face-to-face contact, conversation’s spark ideas. They help us make decisions and overcome the issues that might be facing.

For those of us who generally recharge from some quiet time alone, it’s key that we remember to build connections. Think about not always choosing the quietest day to go to the office. For example, less people may seem like less hassle, but if we’re going to make the effort, isn’t it worth getting the most out of it, rather than just sticking the box of being there? Also making sure contributing to the wider discussion, having our ideas heard and being visible. And that’s quite literally when it comes to turning on my camera while having online discussion.

One thing that surprised many people, about how we behaved while working from home is the number of hours that get put in. Originally, there was a suspicion of productivity will go down. However, it turns out quite the opposite of this is true. In fact, 40% of us work longer hours when working from home. And according to Bloomberg, that accounts to overall increase and improve in the net productivity by 30%. What does this mean for us on a day-to-day basis? It means we need to take care that we’re looking after our mental health. That we’re maintaining our healthy work life balance, and also that even though we’re working from home, we’re maintaining a sense of purpose for ourselves.

What is a sense of purpose? And why is it important? The reason that’s important is because it’s the secret behind the liquid filled, recognizing the fruits of our labor and its intrinsic to our sense of self value. We’re gonna take a look then at how we might be able to maintain that sense of purpose on working from home.

You may be surprised it’s not all about the work you put in, but the structure and lifestyle we build around it that matters.

Firstly, whatever situation you're in, working from home full time or working in a hybrid setup, you need to ensure that each and every day has that sense of purpose. An outcome, a reason for being. You need to be able to identify what you want to achieve and see or feel the results. And if relevant, share those with others. This sum of purpose allows us to feel validated in our own small way. We’re contributing to something larger, bigger than ourselves.

Secondly, it is so important to get some fresh air, even in the pouring rain or beating sun, getting outside reminds that were connected to a life beyond our desk and puts things in perspective, taking a moment to be in that different head space can work wonders for imagination and our creativity. whatever job that we’re doing, we all need that sense of creativity and spark.

Thirdly, exercise. Now I’m not advocating it become some heavy weight body builder. But there is some form of exercise for everyone. Even light exercise will have a positive effect releasing feel good endorphins that lowers the stress levels. Another great aspect of regular exercise is a sense of routine. It really helps our subconscious deal with those more challenging times, and it knows there will be a space to breathe. The sense of achievement from the becoming healthier, stronger and more adept to physical skill in itself could also really rewarding.

Then, make room to help others. It doesn’t matter if it’s full-on volunteering or phone call to the friend you haven’t spoken to for ages. Anything you can do to add to someone else’s well-being is time well spent. Making time to put others first has a self-edifying effect.

Next, do something new. We’ve all been through a whole host of changes in recent years, and it’s allowed us to let go of these preconceived ideas we had of ourselves and take in a fresh perspective. So, perhaps never seen yourself as particularly creative or always the last one to get picked for the sports team. Many of the limits we put on ourselves from long held preconceived beliefs, which once examined are often found to be out of date or not contributing to our sense of purpose in our lives right now. So long as it improves your mood, broadens your horizons and maybe even those of the people of around you, the possibilities are endless, and it could be the start of a whole new, exciting chapter.

Also, have a think about looking into learning. One thing that our world of fire makes crystal clear is just how difficult it is to stand still. Life never does. Usually, we’re just too busy to notice. Act to be looking where you can learn. It’s a great way to broaden our minds and look forward. It might be a formal qualification, learning a new language. Or simply a day’s course for public speaking. It doesn’t matter how big or small. It’s the potential of positive change that matters. There are so many new learning opportunities to that have now opened up online. Geography is no longer a barrier, likewise, many people have discovered that sharing their talents to others in order for them to learn is incredibly fulfilling. So, the diversity of what we can learn, both in person and online, is broadened significantly. ?

Whatever you are drawn to, that will be an opportunity to learn. If you choose to seek it out, finally look to the future. Make the most of now, and plan ahead. Today, won’t last forever. Tomorrow really is a new day. So often in life, people move along looking at what they haven’t done and feeling the weight of what they should have done.

As something needs to be, make a plan of how to do it, make a decision of when to do it, and then get it done. The future is full of possibilities. In order to have a sense of purpose, we need to remove the vague fogginess of what we might want to get some clarity on how things will look when we haven’t created. Creating a clear picture of what we want and where we want it, then working back from there to now works marvels. Designing a strategy of how to get them today to weigh you really want gives everything we do in order to work towards it and a new sense of purpose. Just make sure it isn’t all about the end goal. The new building also needs some maintenance to breathe and reflect and also some key milestone wins on the way.

So, to summing it up - Maintaining a sense of purpose, in our own mind and also in space you work, the relationships we build, brings meaning to our day to day lives. Gradually, these builds growing into a greater sense of fulfillment. Benefiting us and those around us, leading to a more balanced, less stressed and ultimately happier you. It’s been really great sharing my coaching experience today.?
