Meet Jacob Somiah, one of our Store Services Managers.?He oversees a huge community that helps maintain our store to the highest standards.?Jacob is here to tell us about his journey into Harrods and what it takes to be a Store Services Operative in the most luxurious department store in the world.??

What is your role??

I am one of the Store Services managers who is responsible for looking after the cleanliness of the shop in Knightsbridge.

How long have you worked at Harrods, and why did you want to work here?

I joined about 2 years ago and haven’t looked back!?I went through two interviews and felt like I had earned my role; I saw this as a real privilege and an amazing opportunity to work for a 5-star organisation.?I couldn’t say no to the offer! ?


Tell us about your background:

I have always worked in soft services and bring around 20 years of experience with me.?I have previously worked at the Met Police and The London Stock Exchange, before coming to Harrods.

Describe “a day in the life” of a Store Services Manager at Harrods:

A typical day as a Store Services Manager includes ensuring I have the right number of staff – this includes a lot of rota management and assessing suitability to different areas of the store to suit requirements.?It is my responsibility to keep the store clean, so I receive a handover from the morning team to know where to focus attention for the day, and work with all stakeholders, including the facilities helpdesk.?I also conduct very regular floor walks so I can ensure immediate needs are monitored and eliminated proactively.?

Tell us what it’s like to work in your team:?

We are like a family and work together very closely to achieve the high expectations of the business.?Everyone takes responsibility for what is happening in their department and collectively we look after the shop together.

What’s the most interesting aspect of your role???

The daily challenge to make sure to ensure a clean store for our customers, which means being proactive enough to keep checking and picking up on any issues.?

What brings you to work every day???

That superb feeling that I work for Harrods and have something to contribute to the store being a destination for our clients and colleagues.?

Can you tell us about a particular success you have had at Harrods??

My team in Store Services recently came third in our periodic good housekeeping audit across the store.?I led the clean in our department and I am so proud of this great achievement.

How do you embody the Harrods values in your role??

At Harrods, it’s important to live the values daily to reflect who we are.?Keeping our promises when we make them, working together as one team, admitting we are human and make mistakes, as well as taking pride in what we do.?These are the values that drive me daily.?

What would you say is the most important thing for someone to know if they are considering joining Harrods?

We are one team, and it is a fantastic place to work with lots of opportunities to grow if you wanted to progress within Harrods.?
