Maintain Your Foundation

I am not a married man, nor do I have kids, so I cannot speak to those distinct circumstances. I am not a lawyer, financial advisor or health professional, but I can tell you what I see. Assume this is a very general base.

If you get laid off this week, start with this thought: it's not about me, but I must be about me and mine.

Here are a few basic things that you can do to strengthen yourself for the process that will follow to get you moving again.

1) Take an inventory of your health, finances and insurance, and talk with your professionals. Organize all of your information so that you have your budget, contacts, bills, etc. right in front of you so you can share this information with the doctors, therapists, financial advisors and attorneys, etc. can best help you. Also, this re-establishes a sense of control over your data, if not your life. Your health, physical and financial, will be essential to your next steps.

2) Organize your calendar and set your alarm clock for a nice, early time that you can wake at every day. Structure your days so that you can be as active as possible. Positive substitution is far easier than subtraction, so don't fall into the trap of watching Maury from your couch.

2a) Trade in your TV time for gym time, if necessary. If your doctor gives you the thumbs up, fitness will help you keep and grow your energy and optimism.

2b) Trade in your social media for professional training. There are so many excellent free and paid learning resources, including plenty that offer certifications.

3) Build your roster. Organize the contact information for friends and professional connections. Be ready to reach out to folks. This will not be a process in which to go it alone. Your friend's friends will often be incredibly helpful in this journey, so focus on your relationships, and way less on what you think others can do for you.

If you want someone to help keep you on task and provide an alternative view, I am available to help you. Check out my website at www.kanemm.com. Contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to being of service and walking with you.
