4 key survey findings to tell us more about mainframe, it’s value today, and what the future holds
Mainframe and the speed to which organizations can move off of them and onto the Cloud may be one of the biggest conversations amongst executives in some of the largest companies worldwide today. [others are speaking about mainframe in the cloud, and some suggest "The Cloud Before the Cloud"]
As I reflected on this fact during “Juneteenth” a number of thoughts came through my mind; the critical systems and transactions currently run on mainframes, along with the technical architectures and proven efficiencies over the decades, and how we are treating the people.
It was at that moment, I knew I needed to be a part of the solution and started working with mainframe developers and architects, starting a survey and a few other activities, and in an advisory capacity with a staffing firm specializing in Mainframe expertise.
1] No clear end in sight.
More than 72% of respondents stated it is, “Unknown or unpredictable” when mainframes will no longer be relevant in their industry.
2] Proven, Secure, and Reliable.
More than 50% of respondents suggested two main drivers for the primary reasons to continue using Mainframes: “Proven, secure, and reliable” and “Speed and Power” with over 81% stating “Proven, secure, and reliable” as the primary driver.
3] Financial Services and Banking.
100% of respondents said that Financial Services and Banking is where mainframes will remain critical for the next 10+ years. Insurance and Public Sector followed.
4] Limited quality talent available.
More than 80% of respondents stated “The availability of quality talent” in response to the question What are your biggest challenges regarding Mainframe talent acquisition? As you can see below. Next was people retiring, followed by people moving to more current skills, to round out the top
