Boxing Clever
A few years ago we were lucky to be involved in the design of a largely pre-fabricated family home for clients who wanted a contemporary feel, delivered using modern sustainable building methods. The Completely bespoke, multi-level space implemented SIP construction allowing the main volume to be fully assembled on site in less than 5 days.?The benefits were immediately clear, with a superbly finished, highly insulated building created with minimal waste and disruption. Whilst this method of building has elements of innovation it’s not rocket science. So how is the industry and the general public responding to the options available for pre-fab construction?
Thorford Steel Carbon
Down in the Kent countryside our new build family home for private clients has been on site for best part of a year. As with most projects of this nature the scheme went through the inevitable round of value engineering mid way through the tender process in order to deliver on the clients’ budget aspirations.
As part of this process it was suggested that by using bigger, but lighter gauge steel members across the frame we could achieve notable cost savings.?What we didn’t anticipate was a reduction in embodied carbon that this adjustment generated. Studio Lodge Planning
We are delighted to have secured planning permission for a new detached home in rural Oxfordshire. The house captures stunning views across the open countryside while carefully blending into its surroundings to protect the setting of the nearby listed buildings and conservation area.
We also have a very special brief to create a music production studio, providing space where the beauty, colours, patterns and movement in nature provide inspiration for musical expression.?The site presented the perfect opportunity to optimise the orientation and layout of the house to create a home that is sustainable and energy efficient and offers biodiversity enhancements to its surroundings.?We’re now busy developing the technical design and working towards a start on-site in the summer.
Hotto Potto Restaurant
Our latest project for a multi-site client in central London opens to guests next week! Hotto Potto brings the best of Chinese hot-pot cuisine alongside cutting edge Karaoke facilities.
Creating a contemporary take on the traditional hot-pot setup?guests will be able to congregate around a shared cooking experience before moving on to innovative private video karaoke video rooms with stage quality lighting controls.?The restaurant and social space will be a fantastic addition to East London’s hospitality scene.

Lee Terrace Progress
Our new-build townhouse within the Blackheath conservation area of London is rapidly taking shape on site. Nearly five years in the making it’s great to see the project finally come out of the ground.
Shortly the hybrid concrete and timber frame structure will start to receive the reclaimed brickwork and stone cladding and start to blend into its sensitive surroundings.
Common Purpose
This month our Director Jon Humphreys took part in the Barclays’ Aspire 'Leading Beyond Boundaries' programme, an employee leadership development programme, delivered by Common Purpose.?Across two days participants explored the complex societal challenge,?“What needs to be done now to accelerate London’s journey toward its 2030 Net Zero target?”?to build awareness and understand the complexities of partnership working.
Jon represented Mailen Design alongside other organisations such as Sonnedix, Transport for London and The Environment Agency in this vital area and was tasked with developing partnerships to address the challenge.?We were pleased to offer our time to talk about our work in Architecture and its influence on climate and sustainability issues. We also learnt from the collaboration, made amazing new connections and are inspired to develop some of the innovative new ideas in the future.
