Think about a time when you have picked up a new hobby or sport. At first, you might have struggled, feeling awkward and unsure. But as you discovered a particular aspect you were naturally good at—whether it was a knack for strategy in chess, a powerful leg glance in cricket, or an eye for detail in painting—you likely focused more on that strength. By honing this specific skill, you started to enjoy the activity more and see better results. This approach of focusing on what we do well, rather than spreading our efforts thinly across everything, is precisely what magnifying our strengths is all about.
A prime example of someone who magnified their strengths to make an extraordinary impact is Cricketer Virat Kohli. Known for his exceptional batting, Kohli focused on honing his ability to chase targets under pressure. While many players can score runs, Kohli took his strength in run-chases to new heights by mastering his technique, mental resilience, and fitness. His dedication to fitness and disciplined lifestyle further enhanced his performance, allowing him to break numerous records and lead India to major victories. Kohli’s story highlights the power of identifying and amplifying one’s strengths to achieve remarkable success.
Breaking the Traditional Approach
In many organizations, employees are often encouraged to focus on improving their weaknesses. While it is essential to be aware of areas that need improvement, this approach can create an imbalance. Focusing solely on weaknesses can help in surviving a corporate environment, ensuring job security, and even leading to promotions and financial rewards. I can personally attest to this. When I look back at my 30-plus years in the corporate world, working on my weaknesses helped me become a good performer throughout my career and receive significant financial rewards.
However, after taking a break from corporate life, what is helping me now are the strengths I magnified over the years. These strengths have allowed me to redefine my path, pursue passions, and create a unique identity outside the structures of traditional work environments. It’s a powerful reminder that while addressing weaknesses can help you survive; magnifying strengths is what helps you thrive.

Common Pitfalls
Even with the best intentions, there are pitfalls to be aware of when magnifying strengths:
Magnifying our strengths is not just about doing what we are good at; it is about strategically enhancing and applying those abilities to achieve our goals and make a positive impact. In a world where we are often asked to focus on our weaknesses, balancing that approach by playing to our strengths allows us to find our passions, establish our unique identity, and unlock our full potential. While improving weaknesses can help us survive, it is magnifying our strengths that truly enables us to thrive and stand out.
