The Magic of Persuasion
According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, there are three ways that inspire a person to agree with you. These three things are ethos, pathos and logos.
The reason behind getting swept away is that people believe is that the person speaking can be trusted. Whatever may be the speaker's ability, experience, position, or background behind it, ethos is based on influence.
Secondly, pathos means that having an emotional relationship with the audience does not mean the ability of the person in question. A person touches us from within. A General emotionally addresses his soldiers and they are glad to be ready to fight or face death because in their eyes it is a matter of pride for the motherland to be martyred or that they will be able to go to paradise .
Why do some people have so much influence in their personality that they are able to make the person they come in contact to take risks for their word? What is the reason that people are ready to blow up bombs on their bodies at the behest of some magic influencers? What is the reason that when a soldier is martyred, his family feels proud instead of mourning?
What was the reason that Vinoba Bhave came out wearing slippers and people donated 50,000 acres of land. How Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya was able to collect Crores of Rupees and established Banaras Hindu University. How did the mothers of India, in spite of poverty, also gave away jewellery along with their sons for Subhash Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Fauj? What is there in someone's personality that assures us that is the reason for which we come under the influence of some people or get moved by their thoughts?
In 1962, when the then Prime Minister of the country Lal Bahadur Shastri asked the people of the country to observe fast once a week because there could be a shortage of food grains in India during the time of war. Millions of people immediately started following his word and fasted weekly for several months. This is an example of pathos influence. Emotional wire!
Now let's take Logos. Logos (or logic) means that someone can prove his point with the help of facts and figures. The listener feels comfortable in agreeing with such a person and can change his decision accordingly. For example, suppose in a laboratory test that a soap kills 100% of germs, the test data will convince customers to buy that soap.
Aristotle believes that mixing both pathos and logos can be used to make someone listen. For example, it is a mixture of ethos and logos to know about a person's long experience and qualifications and if the figures are with him. This will have an impact more quickly.
For the best effect, people should mix the three of Athos, Pethos and Logos. Politicians use this mixture very well in television debates and in Parliament.
In shows such as Dance India on television, how poverty is glorified when you show the background of children. It is a technique to impress the audience. Surprisingly, at times it is cooked to win the trust of the audience to get their votes. Facts and figures can be mixed, because who is going to investigate? Poverty can be staged. Therefore, when a speaker starts bumping your mind, the conscience should be invoked. Thank you . Onkar Singh Shekhawat
