The Magic of Life

The Magic of Life

My family and I were hit by a drunk driver when I was 8 weeks old in NY. The force of the impact totaled the cars and slammed our car into a telephone pole, splitting our car in half up to the dashboard. My brother who was 3 was sleeping in the backseat and did not have a scratch on him. My father had to get stitches from the windshield breaking. Nearly every bone in my body was broken, my skull fractured from one side of my head to the other. The doctors told my Dad that I was "touch and go." I received numerous blood transfusions that helped keep me alive.

My mother was taken into surgery and died the next early morning due to her injuries, she was 28 years old. She was a school teacher, daughter, sister, wife and mother. The picture attached is the only picture I have with my mother.

The drunk driver lied to the cops initially because he was driving on a suspended license. He finally confessed a few hours after the crash admitted he drank at least a 6 pack. He could not pay his bail and when the trial took place the next year, he was sentence to 3 years with time served.

Despite my injuries, I am grew up to be a competitive swimmer, comedian, speaker and author. The 50th anniversary of the crash was on September 19 and I have dedicated my life in trying to prevent other families from going through the same tragedy.
