?? The Magic of "Encanto" - A Lesson for Multi-Generational Enterprising Families ??

Disney's "Encanto" is more than just a captivating animated film; it's a story that resonates deeply with the challenges and beauty of multi-generational families, particularly those in business together.

Set in the vibrant hills of Colombia, "Encanto" tells the tale of the Madrigal family, each member blessed with unique magical abilities, except for Mirabel. Despite her lack of powers, Mirabel's journey reveals the true essence of family strength, unity, and the often-overlooked value of every individual. Her gift is that she is a warrior for the soul of the family itself.

Lessons for Family Enterprises:

Embrace Individuality: Just like the Madrigals, each family member brings a unique set of skills and perspectives. Recognizing and nurturing these unique abilities and vision for the future can lead to innovative opportunities and a stronger family unit.

Resilience in Adversity: The Madrigals face challenges that threaten their magic and their home. Similarly, family businesses often encounter obstacles that require resilience and adaptability to overcome.

The Power of Unity: The film beautifully illustrates that when a family stands together, they can weather any storm. In business, this unity can drive success and ensure the longevity of the enterprise.

The Importance of Legacy: "Encanto" highlights the significance of understanding and honoring the past while shaping the future. For enterprising families, this means balancing tradition with innovation.

Communication is Key: The Madrigals' journey emphasizes the importance of open communication in resolving conflicts and strengthening relationships. In a family business, clear communication is essential for effective decision-making and conflict resolution.

The Family

The Madrigal family in "Encanto" offers a rich tapestry of characters, each with their own story, dreams, abilities, and challenges. Here are some of the implications and lessons we can learn from each member of the family, including the impact of Pedro's loss:

Abuela Alma: The family matriarch, Abuela Alma, carries the weight of her husband Pedro's sacrifice and the responsibility of protecting the miracle that sustains their home. Her experience teaches us about the importance of resilience, the burden of leadership, and the need to adapt and heal past traumas to embrace the future.

Pedro: Although Pedro's presence in the film is brief, his sacrifice sets the foundation for the family's magical abilities. His loss reminds us of the impact of legacy and the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by previous generations while creating space and opportunity to explore new paths.

Julieta: Her ability to heal through her cooking represents the nurturing that a family deeply needs. Her character teaches us about the power of care and compassion in maintaining family well-being.

Agustín: As Julieta's husband and an outsider to the family's magic, Agustín's clumsy but loving nature shows that one doesn't need magical powers to be an integral part of the family. His presence highlights the value of acceptance and the importance of creating a family culture that includes those who join the family through marriage or adoption.

Isabela: Initially seen as the perfect daughter with the ability to make flowers bloom, Isabela's story arc teaches us about the pressures of expectations and the beauty of embracing one's true self, imperfections, and all. A critical moment in the relationships of the family is when Isabela finally admits that she was going along with the plan of Abuela for the sake of the family, even though it wasn't her dream to get married to Mariano (which coincidentally unlocks the potential for a more suitable relationship with Pepa).

Luisa: The strong and reliable middle sister, Luisa, possesses superhuman strength. Her character addresses the issue of burnout and the importance of acknowledging one's vulnerabilities and asking for help when needed. With the value of her physical strength being obviously valuable to the family and community, she suffers internally from not having permission and space to explore her full self as well as the need to rest and be cared for.

Mirabel: The protagonist of the story, Mirabel, is the only Madrigal without a magical gift. Her journey teaches us about the significance of inner strength, the value of every family member, and the idea that one's worth is not determined by their abilities but by their character and actions. In the end, Mirabel emerges as the Family Champion of the rising generation, fully prepared to lead the family in a similar but unique way to Abuela Alma.

Dolores: With her superhuman hearing, Dolores represents the challenges of being privy to too much information and the importance of discretion and privacy in a close-knit family. She also longs for a deeper relationship that will help her build her own part of the growing family. In the end, as her sister courageously opens up about her dreams, the opportunity for a deeper connection emerges.

Camilo: Able to shapeshift into anyone, Camilo's character explores themes of identity and the pressures of living up to different roles and expectations within the family. His long-term challenge is to connect with his true self so that he can use his gifts for the common good of the family and the community.

Antonio: The youngest Madrigal, who can communicate with animals, represents the innocence and wonder of childhood. His gift's awakening signifies the importance of nurturing and supporting the rising generation's potential. There are many beautiful moments where his courage inspires his family.

Bruno: Often misunderstood due to his ability to see the future, Bruno's story highlights the dangers of miscommunication and the harm that can come from ostracizing family members. His reconciliation with the family underscores the importance of understanding and forgiveness. In the end, the family is once again united, which is the true magic of family.

Overall, the Madrigal family's story in "Encanto" offers valuable lessons about the complexities of family dynamics, the importance of individuality, and the strength that comes from unity and acceptance.

Their Community

The Madrigal legacy has significant implications for the surrounding community in "Encanto," highlighting the interconnectedness between a family's legacy and the well-being of the community they are part of. Here are some key points:

Source of Stability: The Madrigals' magical gifts are not just for their own benefit but serve as a source of stability and support for the entire community. For example, Julieta's healing abilities and Luisa's strength are used to help others in need.

Community Identity: The existence of the Madrigals and their magical house is a central part of the community's identity. The family's legacy contributes to the sense of wonder and pride among the villagers.

Economic Impact: The Madrigals' abilities likely have a positive economic impact on the community. For instance, Isabela's power to create flowers could contribute to local commerce and agriculture.

Social Responsibility: The family's legacy comes with a sense of social responsibility. The Madrigals are expected to use their gifts to maintain harmony and address the community's needs.

Cultural Preservation: The Madrigals' traditions and the magic that surrounds them contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, which is important for the community's history and continuity, which is driven by a sense of safety and relative certainty about the future.

Impact of Family Dynamics: The internal dynamics of the Madrigal family, including their conflicts and resolutions, indirectly affect the community's well-being. When the family is in harmony, it positively influences the overall atmosphere of the community.

Inspiration for Unity: The Madrigals' ability to come together and overcome challenges serves as an inspiration for the community to unite and work collaboratively toward common goals.

Dependency Risks: While the community benefits from the Madrigals' gifts, there is also a risk of over-reliance on the family's abilities, which could lead to challenges if the family legacy were ever to fail or diminish.

The Madrigal's legacy has a profound impact on the surrounding community, providing support, shaping identity, and fostering a sense of unity. However, it also brings to light the importance of balance and the potential risks of dependency on a single source for stability and prosperity.

Take the opportunity to open up the dialogue with your own family using the film as the subject.

Character Reflections: Which character did you relate to the most and why? Were there any characters whose experiences or struggles particularly stood out to you?

Themes and Messages: What do you think were the main themes and messages of the film? How do they apply to our family and the way we interact with each other?

Family Dynamics: How did the Madrigals' family dynamics compare to our own? Were there any moments that made you reflect on how we communicate and support each other as a family?

Cultural Appreciation: What did you learn or appreciate about culture from the film? Were there any aspects that you found particularly interesting or beautiful? Things to think about when discussing culture include shared language, food, celebration, relationships, traditions, beliefs, religion, architecture, art, technology and tools, social norms, clothing, and fashion.

Lessons Learned: What lessons about family, individuality, and legacy do you think we can take away from "Encanto"? How can we apply these lessons to strengthen our own family values and legacy?

Future Generations: How do you think the themes of "Encanto" might be relevant to future generations in our family? What do you hope they will learn from both the film and our discussions about it?

Conclusion

"Encanto" is not just a story of magic and miracles; it reflects the complexities, challenges, and beauty of multi-generational, enterprising families. It reminds us that every family member, regardless of their role or abilities, is vital to the family's legacy and success.

When the "miracle" is missing, the Madrigal family and their surrounding community prove that their love and cooperation are what truly make the dreams possible. Let's take inspiration from the Madrigals and strive to create an 'encanto' within our own families and enterprises!

Jon Bachura love this! thanks for zooming in on the connection between family enterprises and vibrant community. We have a tendency to couch an enterprise’s impact primarily in terms of economics (e.g., jobs, payroll, philanthropy) and may miss these other positive contributions to healthy community like stability, cultural preservation, and modeling how to work together to solve common challenges. Good stuff!

I have been somewhat uninspired by Disney in the last few years, but your comments give me hope… and I concur with everyone else: Jon Bachura, you should use the Family Business lens to analyze many other movies, as well as novels etc.

PS: You could start an article series called "Deals and Disney" or "Deals and Reels"? - I'd subscribe. For bonus points, would you allow the communidad the opportunity to vote on the movie you use next? For extra difficulty could we vote on the theme and film?

Great analogy Jon Bachura! Really like how you've pulled the themes together as a great illustration for family businesses. I particularly liked your point about family dynamics- we often see relationships have the most significant impact (good or bad) on both the deal process and the outcome. "The internal dynamics of the Madrigal family, including their conflicts and resolutions, indirectly affect the community's well-being. When the family is in harmony, it positively influences the overall atmosphere of the community." Thanks for sharing this! Extra points for making my brain play "we don't talk about Bruno" on repeat.
