The Magic Is In The Details
A short story about how to find magic. Many years ago I was a enthusiastic musician with the beat in my soul and the rhythm in my hands twirling sticks like Motley Crue and kicking bass just like Lars Ulrich. Those years of expressiveness were powerful and wonderful and that long ago albeit surreal. So much so that a music studio was created and music tuition became a dream job.
Playing many hours of music mostly in my garage between the long hours of shift work to satisfy the soul of expression enabling much joy. The years went by and my appetite for construction moved into melodic percussion and the amazing sounds of marimba and shona music. Whilst on this road I learnt to read the detail of drum transcription and then even melodic percussion music. After that I learnt pipe drums and my drumkit skills became significantly better, and I mean significantly. The notes and drum rolls on the sheet became the detailed focus my attention. A thirst for the visual to kineasthetic outcry grew and grew. Whilst the energy for the music filled my bones, the detail of pipe drumming got me to be exceptional in the skill. I wondered how this was so, I even went on a couple of field trips around the region with a local band and they helped me alot. But the kilt just wasn't what got me the excitment, however the pipe drums details did! What I realised was the mastery is in the details! The music sheet had notes not very many other people understood and the technique was renown, just think of the Swiss Army Corps (if you have heard of them). Many people would come and say "I wish I could play drums like that".
What distinguishes the master from the expert and novice is his or her ability to make finer distinctions whether these are in music, art, literature, patterns, etc. This is a tip for any new discipline. Learning the details and even the meta-details becomes very magical. Magical in the ways to specifically ground what we do with a precision focus and mindset. Through learning to see in business (a lean term), I found the skills to became a meta-coach. Meta-coaching starts with the Meta-Model of language, the first NLP model. It was that model that I recently helped to create competency distinctions around to offer even more precision than the original model, talk about met-detail! But at first I wasn't very good at doing that. To be able to speak with precision and to ground experiences into specific referents can lead to opportunity for re-mapping our patterned brains and human functioning thereby giving a new lease on life.
So creating details came the move in areas of life by learning to reduce the instrumental behaviours (lower needs) and enhance the non-instrumental behaviours. I was now ready to realise the value of details that are relevant and right for the performance of being a meta-coach. The practice of this detailing skill has enabled me to perform the excellence that I desire in life and facilitate that for the life of my clients. By making a decision to expand my habitual thinking style (called a meta-program), I detail specifics for greater precision allowing me to find the edge. Here's some questions to consider. Where in your life could you do with a little more details? I now offer you to make this detailed decision too. Will you do that? When will you make the decision? Do you have the permission within yourself, with the frames in the back of your mind, to make your decision to learn the meta-details?
When you participate in learning facilitation skills through a program we deliver called Professional Communication Skills, meta-detailing is one skill you want to have on high! This skill allows you to discover high quality information. Do you have the inner movie of what this would look and sound like? Do you need to remove any old ideas about getting lost in irrelevant details and wasting time with details? If you hold thoughts about details like "the devil is in the details" your ability to practice new skills will be limited by your beliefs about thinking, and yourself.
So develop an action plan on all of this, and practicing the detailing, sometimes also called a refining skill. In fact, to deliberately practice detailing is one of the most useful skills you can develop for any kind of learning and for use in life and relationships. So what's your action plan? What will you experiment with? How will you review your experience so that you can get quality feedback and gain a sense of success in this meta-detailing skill?
