The Magic of Christmas

Growing up, one of my fondest memories from Christmas is waking up early with excitement to open all of the presents hidden under the tree. My sister and I would leave handwritten notes for Santa with cookies and milk every Christmas Eve. As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that the real magic of Christmas truly never ends, and the greatest gifts are not the ones found under the tree but rather the loved ones that I am surrounded by.
Although this Christmas eerily resembles last year’s celebration and despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, we continue to wrap our presents, decorate our homes, and hang up lights so that those around us feel the message Christmas brings. Regardless of race, religion, or background, we find hope in togetherness and seek joy and peace during this special season. Christmas is not only a time of celebration, but it also involves a lot of sacrifice.
At Christmas, we remember the sacrifice God made for us. He gave us the gift of life through the birth of his son, Jesus Christ. During this pandemic, we have witnessed many individuals making sacrifices for others. Healthcare workers, scientists, teachers, retail workers- just to name a few- working tirelessly to ensure our economy and country continue to function while ensuring our needs are being met. Parents have sacrificed their careers to stay home with their children. Organizations have come together at a time of need to address issues such as supply chain shortages. While sacrifice comes in many forms, the gifts that they reap are definite. The gift of love. The gift of peace. The gift of happiness.
On this Christmas, give a smile to a stranger who seems to be having a tough day, give patience to someone who is testing yours, give forgiveness to someone who may never have the courage to ask for it, give time to someone who asks for nothing more, give kindness to someone who seems to deserve it the least. Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it the most. It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future.
