“Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony” – Mahatma Gandhi
Have you ever looked at someone or something and felt this rush of energy that drove you to put the widest smile on your face? You may have even felt the roaring butterflies in your stomach when you saw that pretty guy or girl walking past you? It can also range from feeling the droplets of rain pour down onto your skin to being cuddled up with a good book with your favorite cup of coffee. As I mention these to you, you must be getting a warm and comfortable feeling that makes you feel at home and forget for just a brief second, about the raging horrors of the world.
So I ask you, my dear readers, what is this feeling that brings about a smile on each of every one of our faces?
This feeling is simply known as happiness or being in a state of euphoria; it can be derived from the work you do, the people you speak to, the relationships you have and build, and the current place where you are in life right now. As Tony Robbins would put it, your life conditions should match that of your blueprint.
If I were to ask you, why you are happy right now, there would be a plethora of reasons running in your mind right now.
But let us talk about the other side of the coin, if I were to reverse the question and ask you “Why are you unhappy right now” and as you are reading this, the number of thoughts can flood your mind which can factor into your unhappiness. Maybe you are not happy with your job, your current relationships, your current state of fitness and so much more. Now, my dear readers, I cannot give you the key or secret to happiness because that all starts with YOU! But what I can give you is the map and directions that can help you to change your life.
I can also help you narrow down the root cause for your happiness/unhappiness, and what you can exactly do to change that. Now we must remember to focus on two main reasons as I mentioned earlier, your life conditions and your current blueprint, let’s break it down;
Your Life Conditions
Your life conditions can range from anything that stems from what you do, how you do it, when do you do it, and importantly, why you do it. You must be pondering as to what I mean by this, this means your current place in life, your job, your status, your fitness level, and anything that relates to YOU and what YOU do. To certain people who are happy with their current life conditions, you are doing an amazing job and you should keep going further but for those of you who feel like something is missing and that lack of that something is causing you to feel unhappy or down. Then you need to take a step back and re-evaluate how you can change it for the better, you need to ask yourself, how you can bridge the gap between what I am doing right now and what you want to be doing in the future. Start by assessing any factor that may contribute towards your unhappiness, is it a toxic relationship, is it a toxic job or is it an unhealthy lifestyle? Whatever the reason is, this is how you can make a change for the better.
Let’s say you want to lose all of that Christmas or New Year’s weight, you have to promise yourself that you will start working out and start working towards achieving that goal; if you want to start expanding your knowledge, start following your dream course or start reading e-books which are freely available at the tip of your fingertips online. Do all of the things that will feed into your dopamine and will spark your endorphins as well. However, there is a catch to all of this, which I will subtly tell you as you read on.
Your Blueprint
The most important thing to understand before you read this section is to know that your Life Conditions and your blueprint are connected in a certain way.
Now when you consider a blueprint for the construction of a house or building, it outlines the entire skeletal framework of the entire project, right? Now, what happens when we apply a blueprint to our very own lives?
Your blueprint is your plan that you told yourself, your parents, and probably your teachers as well what you want to be in life and how you will achieve it. You may have decided that you wanted to be a doctor, an engineer, a teacher, or even an entrepreneur; and all of the actions you take to ensure that it happens becomes your blueprint or your plan for your life to achieve that said goal.
But what happens when you feel lost while you are achieving this goal or you feel that you are not doing the right profession and that causes you to be unhappy because of it? Then, my dear readers, you need to re-assess your blueprint for your life; assess and analyze what went wrong, and ask yourself, how I can fix this instead of choosing to give up. You should ask yourself what you want to do as a result of you achieving your goal of becoming a doctor or an engineer. Etc.
To give you a classical example from a chapter in my life, a few years ago one of my professors had asked everyone in our class what we wanted to be in life. And of course, you had your common answers such as a doctor, engineer, lawyer, and teacher, and so on, but when my professor had diverted the question to me, I said that I wanted to help people in any way that I can, which astounded my professor and the amazing people in my class. Be it motivate them, train them or just give a listening ear to whatever problem they may face, I wanted to be able to help people and that is why I chose to join the field of Human Resources to help not only my employees but anyone and everyone that I may stumble across.
Now here is the fun part, once you connect your life conditions with your blueprint in the right way and you make steady PROGRESS from it, then my dear readers, you have the right to be happy. That quote from Mahatma Gandhi makes sense now, doesn’t it?
But remember I said that there is a little catch to this, the catch is your happiness must never be confused with fulfillment. You can be happy from getting a bonus, completing a project or an assignment in time, or even be recognized for the work you do but only chose to be happy for that moment, you should learn to celebrate the little moments and victories in life but do not focus solely on this, you should aim for the next stage in your life. By saying this, you should never give up! Keep pushing the boundaries and break through your limits and you would be surprised to find out what you truly are capable of and that is what it means to be happy and content in this scary journey called “Life”.
To end on a good note, Simon Sinek once said, “A true sense of purpose and happiness does not come from what we do for ourselves but it comes from doing something to help others achieve greatness”
May we all find happiness in whatever it is we may do and may we all rise together!
