The MAG-AI 7

Tradewinds is at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) research and development, constantly making new discoveries and advancing the field. In order to classify and understand these innovations, we have established the Magnificent AI 7, or the Mag-AI 7, which represents the seven distinct types of AI that we currently are focusing with the more complex AI being done in the near future. In our journey of discovery, we have been able to provide AI consulting for businesses who are entering their own path of AI development and productization.

Our journey into AI coding began in 1999 when my co-founder, Shana Whitmarsh, and I started collaborating on automation-oriented Python coding. We took on various projects, including automating aspects of community sites like a newspaper in Martha's Vineyard. Additionally, we explored the application of AI algorithms in a women's surfing streaming community called She Rips, where we delved into video streaming and big data analysis. Notably, we developed an AI anti-jamming system for RC aerial vehicles that were live streaming action sports events and transmitting at the same time on the internet. We were being jammed by the TV networks who were also televising the outdoor event.

Throughout our extensive research, we have come across various terminologies and categorizations for our AI development. While these terms may differ, there are intersections between them. It is crucial for us to comprehend and establish a consensus on these terms to gain a clear understanding of what AI technology entails.

The following are the Mag-AI 7 types of artificial intelligence:

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): This refers to AI specifically designed to perform specific tasks but lacks independent learning capabilities. Examples include image recognition software, self-driving cars, virtual assistants, AI-controlled RC aerial vehicles, and automated algorithms for classification or indexing in databases.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): AGI is designed to learn, think, and perform tasks at a human-like level. Several AI developments at Tradewinds Technology fall under this category. The goal is to create machines capable of handling multifunctional tasks and serving as intelligent assistants in our daily lives. Examples include supercomputers, quantum hardware, and generative AI models like ChatGPT.

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI): ASI refers to AI that surpasses human knowledge and capabilities. While concerns about Sci-Fi-like scenarios come to mind, commercialized superintelligence is still roughly two decades away. We envision this stage resembling responsive-conversational computers seen on Star Trek, evolving into the character "Data." It is important to consider both the positive and negative aspects of advancements in any technology.

Reactive Machines: Reactive Machines are AI systems capable of responding to stimuli in real-time but unable to store or recall information for future use. These serve as the foundation for our ongoing innovations and development.

Limited Memory: AI falling into this category can store knowledge and utilize it to learn and train for future tasks. Many businesses already incorporate this type of AI, ranging from chatbots to self-driving cars and other advanced applications.

Theory of Mind: This type of AI can sense and respond to human emotions while also performing tasks similar to limited memory machines. At Tradewinds, we are conducting theoretical research on this concept. However, accurately interpreting emotional cues is complex, and AI's learning process may encounter errors. It is important to note that the notion of job automation increasing when AI can respond to emotional signals remains in the realm of science fiction and is a distant future scenario.

Self-aware: Self-aware AI possesses the ability to recognize emotions in others, exhibit self-awareness, and display human-level intelligence. Contrary to popular belief, our research suggests that this is not the final stage of AI development. We do not foresee AI usurping human jobs; instead, we believe AI will enhance job opportunities and augment the excellent work humans already do.

At Tradewinds, we are constantly striving to push the boundaries of AI innovation. We firmly believe that understanding the various types of AI and their potential applications is crucial for responsibly and ethically harnessing the power of this technology.
