Maersk Uses Material Passports for Transitioning from Linear to Circular Economy Model

Maersk Line Establishes Circular Supply Chains to Achieve Net Zero 10 Years Ahead.

As a proud ex-employee of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), I am reminded of very popular ad campaign “There’s a little bit of SAIL in everybody’s life". Steel, one of the basic and essential industry, is used in building roads, automobiles, railways, utensils, wires, buildings, equipment, ships etc. Sadly, Steel also happens to be one of the most polluting industries in the world as it extracts millions of tonnes of materials from earth like iron ore, use massive water and energy to produce and transport steel products.

To minimize the production of new steel materials, Maersk Line, a Danish company, has developed a digital Cradle to Cradle? material passport documenting 95% of the vessel’s materials for its new giant 60,000T Tripe E line of ships. This means that the individual vessel components can easily be reused by Maersk or others when the vessel is eventually decommissioned. The Cradle to Cradle? label guarantees that the individual materials have the purity needed for the steel to be recyclable. Apart from reducing its carbon footprint, this has also allowed Maersk to avert against rising steel prices. Apart from reducing its carbon footprint, it also positions Maersk as market leader in sustainability, enhance its brand and create new revenue streams by making a better use of the company waste.

Maersk Line has committed to being a leader in sustainable shipping and is currently offering shipping with the lowest carbon footprint in the industry. Maersk business is committed to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2040 – one decade ahead of its initial 2050 ambition.

Digital material passports open up huge business opportunities while decoupling economic growth from material extraction.

Cradle to Cradle? is a registered trademark of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC.

Thank you Marina Pugacheva for continuing contribution.
