The Madeira Question No One has Answered (or asked)!
Now that some of the initial excitement is fading regarding the big project Madeira announcement it is time to get an answer to the biggest question that has not even been asked!
(For anyone late to the dance, check out this quick primer on project Madeira on eWeek).
Right after the announcement there was a flurry of important questions, some answered some not, which flooded the ERP fanboy blogs and social media. A non-scientific sample:
- Will the inventory module support periodic moving average costing?
- When will the shop floor control module be released?
- Will I be able to enter orders via Siri…sorry…Cortana?
- I have a big five user deal…but they need a discount…can I get 30% if they promise to buy two more users next quarter?
- How will I feed my family on Son of QuickBooks billing rates?
You know…the usual VAR stuff.
Initially, I was fascinated by the question of how this entire project was kept secret for so long. I pondered that for a bit but then it hit me…that is not even close to the big question I want answered!
Oh no!
Not even close.
After years of watching Microsoft put AX technology and functionality on a pedestal how is it possible that their new Azure feeding baby is built on…gasp…NAV technology?
As Lewis Black might say…"The mind reels".
It seems like only yesterday that NAV was lumped with GP and LOL SL into one SMB bucket. Relegated to the kids table while the adults ate in the dining room with the good china and silver.
Now THAT is the question I want answered. Because the answer to that question launches an even more important question regarding the strategic misstep that decision could represent.
Stay tuned…theories ahead!

8 å¹´Very interesting Peter, but for me the big question is how the NAV classic partners will add value when Microsoft is taking NAV&CRM&PBI to Dynamics365 as it did with other applications to Office365...It's possible to add the same value with Office365 applications?

8 å¹´I don't think Nav will get less attention or resources. There will be exchange of "improvements" between the two product (already happening with item attributes). They created a simplified solution for lower end target. Not sure if pricing will be competitive though.

8 å¹´As to why on NAV technology? - At Microsoft, as a mobile-first, cloud-first company, we make careful decisions about our future and strategic roadmap. We recognize the monumental impact on customers and businesses of these decisions. Thereby, when selecting the NAV platform for Project "Madeira" (Dynamics 365 now), we ensured that we pick the best platform for business solutions in the SMB market segment, for the mobile-first, cloud-first world. :) Sincerely, Marko
As far as question are concerned i've got two : 1/ What's the price per user per month ? 2/ How fat will be my Azure bill ie : will I still be billed for each time the CPU will be ticking even at night and on week ends ? BTW Amazon Alexa is what Apple's Siri should have been ;-) // Tarek

8 å¹´Do you really think a Madeira customer needs periodic average costing? NAV can do it so MS could open it up for Madeira but the target audience does not need it. Users should be able to get started with Madeira without a functional consultant. That is why we have the wizards and the walkme stuff. Did you even look at the technology behind it?
