Made it, Two Years!
Well it’s now officially been two years since I started my business, so I figured it is now a good time to reflect. This will have a bit of a different spin to my last reflections.
1. Goals – So now that it has been going a while, it is a good time to relook at why I started the business, what my goal was heading into it, have I actually succeeded in the goals I set.
Also I have realised a vitally important thing, is to now redo my goals going forward. Where am I heading, where is the business heading, how do I get there and most importantly is it where I want to be going.
2. Niche – You need to find your niche to start with, and really get to know it. Make sure not to be too limited though. You need to be diverse enough to if there is a slight downturn in one area, you can quickly shift to another.
3. Loving what you do – Now that all the enthusiasm of starting something new has gone, it has come down to actually enjoying the day to day ‘grind’. In any job, everyday is not going to be fantastic, there are going to be ups and downs, and there will be times when you feel like you are on top of the world, and times you want to throw in the towel. In a workplace having people around you to help you through the down times, and celebrate the good helps you keep engaged and you tend to stay in the business. Running your own business, especially at the start it has to be more about enjoying what you actually do, keeping at it through the bad, and riding the highs.
4. Hiring and Firing – Near the start of the year, I decided to take on an employee. Unfortunately, this has not worked out. It did make me realise though, how crucial it is for me as a recruiter to help find the right person for the business. It has made me appreciate the process gone through to find the person, time taken to teach them your systems and investment you make into a person. It has made me appreciate more the importance of finding the right person to fit into a team.
5. Planning – Planning out the day is vital to keeping yourself productive. I find especially as a business owner, there are innumerable tasks that ‘need’ to be done. Few of those tasks would actually be ‘productive’, most of them I can just keep myself busy with. Plan out what needs to be done to progress things throughout the day, week, month and then when you have finished those tasks for the day go onto the non-essential tasks.
6. Learning – You need to continuously learn new things in business. Talking to people about different areas, which include the general market, how to run a business and more information in your sector. It can help to put things in perspective, to hear people who have been in your shoes, and done what you have before you.
7. Overall – Overall it is very up and down running your own business. There are positives and negatives on doing it for yourself or working for someone else. I feel I can now appreciate both sides and the values of doing both.
