'Made in Pakistan' Could Become the Next Big Thing in IT.

Introduction

The phrase "Made in Pakistan" is gradually echoing louder across the corridors of the Information Technology (IT) sector, both in hardware and software development. Companies like Viper Technology are making strides in assembling top-notch computer systems for the last 3 decades. While the industry's potential is monumental, there are hurdles, mainly in the form of governmental policies that need addressing for a fully realized vision.

The Hardware Side of Things: A Flourishing Opportunity

The Employment Landscape

Local assembly and manufacturing of computer systems contribute significantly to job creation, not just in the form of direct employment, such as engineers and assembly line workers, but also indirectly. Auxiliary sectors like packaging, marketing, and after-sales services are thriving as a result.

Foreign Exchange Conservation

By reducing the need for imported hardware, the country saves crucial foreign exchange, bolstering the national economy.

A Win-Win in Pricing

Local production cuts costs by approximately 25%, a win-win situation for both manufacturers and consumers.

Customized Solutions

One significant advantage of local assembly is customization. Companies can build systems tailored to the specific needs of the Pakistani market.

Legend Computers: A Case Study from China

Legend Computers is better known today as Lenovo, a multinational technology company registered in Beijing, China. Founded in 1984, Lenovo has become one of the world's leading PC manufacturers, among other products and services it offers. Originally, the company was called "Legend" and primarily focused on the Chinese market. In 2003, it was rebranded as Lenovo to better appeal to international markets. And in 2005, the company gained international attention when it acquired IBM's Personal Computing Division

It serves as an excellent example. They’ve achieved significant cost savings and market penetration by focusing on local manufacturing, indicating what's possible when a country gives precedence to its own industries.

The Software Spectrum

The software development industry in Pakistan is another domain showing tremendous promise. Sister companies like VIION Technology are expanding the frontiers of digital marketing and software solutions.

Global Potential

Local software houses are already garnering international clients, thereby earning foreign exchange and putting Pakistani expertise on the global map.

High Standards

The industry is characterized by quality and innovation, key ingredients in transforming Pakistan into a global IT hub.

Hindrances: The Elephant in the Room

While the prospects are exhilarating, there are significant roadblocks. Government policies often discourage local brands in favor of foreign ones.

The Need for Equal Opportunity

For the local industry to flourish there should be equal opportunities, if not a preference, for local companies. If the government provides even a level playing field, local enterprises have the potential to skyrocket in growth and recognition.

Conclusion

The "Made in Pakistan" label is not just a tag but a whole ecosystem waiting to erupt with endless possibilities. Both the hardware and software sectors can propel Pakistan into becoming a significant player in the global IT landscape. However, for this to happen, systemic issues must be addressed, primarily by revising governmental policies to favor local enterprises.

If even given a fighting chance, Pakistan’s IT and software industries have the potential not just to compete but to lead, transforming the "Made in Pakistan" label into a global seal of quality and innovation.
