Dear colleagues and LinkedIn friends.

This time I wanted to share these pictures I extracted from a remarkable movie/documentary about the role of one of the greatest women in Science, particularly in the Radiology/ Radiation field, Madam Marie Curie. Her role in World War I was remarkable. So, World War I had begun, she was in France trying to open her “The Radium Institute”, so she decided to drive through France with an x-ray Unit because she envisioned that the x-ray units could help to identify injuries like fractures inside the soldiers, locate bullets to extract them. Remarkably she used the classic 2 orthogonal views of the anatomic part as well as fluoroscopy and here knowledge about mathematics helped her to locate bullets with great precision so that she could guide a surgeon to the bullet to extract it. A medical officer asked her: I was trying to find a bullet, but I couldn’t, she asked him: Were you using only one image? The medical officer said: yes! To what she replied: that is the reason why. You’ll need at least 2 images. Perhaps this was the beginning of Computed Tomography, right?!!

Due to her great success, she trained many other women to do the job and at some point, there were a lot of mobile x-ray units driving around…many soldier lives were saved!

Happy International Women’s day!!

Best regards!

Robert

Thank you for sharing. I did not know this about the orthogonal views - very interesting. What a remarkable woman, ahead of her time.

And her heroic resistance in confronting autocratic governments, at the risk of her freedom & possibly her life! Unrecognized , but a true SUPERHERO, not to mention brilliant scientist & benefactor of humankind.?
