In general, due to better insulation of the buildings, the heat demand has gone down, but some heating will still be required in the future.
Within the draft of the revised Part L 2020, the carbon factor for electricity has gone down significantly. This may put an end to using fossil fuels / boilers to provide heating energy into our buildings.
Options for the future will be heat pumps, but also direct electrical heating. Direct electrical heating does have benefits compared to LPHW heating in combination with a heat pump. Recent studies also show the benefit of direct electrical heating, when it comes to Embodied Carbon of different heating systems.

With the new Katherm HKE Trenches there is now a unit available that combines these advantages of direct electrical heating with the possibility of chilled water cooling as one single unit, under one grille.
The new Katherm HKE Trenches are designed to cover all your cooling as well as all your heating demands.
With the use of these units, the complete LHPW distribution pipework within the floors as well as in the riser, including all fittings, valves and lagging, can be omitted. This will have a significant impact on the Embodied Carbon calculations.
In addition this will come, on the one hand with a significant saving in installation time and on the other hand with a cost saving with regards to the material as well as the labour not needed. Please keep in mind, that also commissioning of the LPHW will not be required with the use of these direct electrical heating units.
In cooling mode, the Katherm HKE units will be served by chilled water. As with the traditional Katherm HK Trenches the units work with dry cooling, as well as wet cooling, as all units will come with a condensate tray as standard factory-fitted.
All the other benefits of the well-known and successful Katherm HK units, like lowest noise data and SFP values within the range of 0,08 to 0,12 Watts per l/s also apply to the new Katherm HKE Trench Heating and Cooling.
